Asus Trinity cometh.... O_O

Sooner than expected, we've been served some more information about the prototype triple-core card from ASUS. Radeon HD 3850 Trinity will sport three RV670 cores, all on separate MXM modules. Last we reported we did not know the exact specifications of the card, but those have been unveiled today. The core clock is 668MHz and each core has 512MB GDDR3 memory running at 1656MHz, that's a total of 1536MB (and 960 unified shaders if you want to get technical).

That 3dmark score is nothing short of impressive. Amd is really making strides in the gpu segment. It's looking more and more like my next video card purchase is going to be ati.

I wonder what kind of price tag that baby comes with.

DAAMIT 3850 X2 takes curtain

You probably were expecting this

By Wily Ferret: Friday, 25 April 2008, 11:23 AM

AFTER TAKING ITS SWEET TIME perfecting its answer to the GX2 cards, AMD is ramping up its dual-chip card output with a new model designed for the not-quite-so high-end gamers that it previously hit with the 3870 X2.

If you were a betting man, you might have put a few squids on the next dual-chip card out of DAAMIT being a slightly slower clocked version of the debut board, marketeered as a 3850 X2 in line with its single card brethren. Well, you'd be right, although we're not sure exactly what odds Ladbrokes would have given you.

The card is due to get its official unveiling next week, but a few of the hardware site boys have got their hands on preview models already. You can see Ryan Sprout's take at PC Perspective here.

The core chips on board run at 670MHz and the memory runs at 830MHz - as compared to the 825/900MHz speeds of its big daddy. Don't expect a whole lot of overclocking headroom - given that the chips themselves are simply the same thing speed binned, chances are these have already been tested at the higher speeds and found to be lacking.

The board has 1GB of RAM in all and will cost US punters around $350, so expect that to hash out to around £300 in Blighty. Look out for masses of the little devils to hit hardware reviewers next week.

However you can get urs NOW: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121245

For 349 dollars, amm, i'll pass. Just doing some reviewing in my head, 9600gt's performance is sort of on par with the 3870, so two 9600gt's in sli should keep up with a 3870x2 right? If the 9600gt's are faster than a 3850, then two 9600gt's in sli should outperform a 3850x2 right.. someone help me with the maths. Because a 9600gt solution looking much better than getting this card. oh and well TWIMTBP will also help.

**** just found this to back up my view, http://en.expreview.com/2008/02/23/geforce-9600gt-review/?page=16, seems like 9600gt's in sli beat the 3870x2 in real world gaming, but they lose in synthetic tests.

Well noone is arguing that the 9600GT in SLI wouldn't be faster in gaming. But it's nice to have options. On the other hand, someone who's heavy into.. say Folding @ Home and could care less about gaming, this card would WTFPWN any Geforce (this is a misnomer seeing as no Nvidia card can fold). But you get the idea.

yea... good to have variety, keeps prices under control and consumers happy.

*off topic*.. i forgot about ATi's cards ability to use the folding at home program, with so many units in the 3870's and 3850's, that would be sweet. but why... never mind.. i can't wait to see ATi's offering with their 4k series..
