Though this is a bit off topic... what about:
Quote
Sub $200 Linux machine is a sell out
Great reviews

By Nick Farrell: Tuesday, 13 November 2007, 8:28 AM

EVEREX'S TC2502 gPC mass-market $200 desktop computer is apparently a sell out at Wal-Mart.

The machine was touted as the first sub-$200 Linux PC on the market.

The low spec computer, which comes without any monitor or frills, has been selling out partly due to its unusual Linux based operating system.

Under the bonnet is a cut down version of Ubuntu, called Enlightenment. This GUI is a lot lighter than Gnome or KDE and is a hell of a lot faster than Vista. It also does not need much of a spec to get a decent effect.

Having a look at the screenshots, Enlightenment looks like a green version of the Apple operating system.

Looking at the glowing reviews the machine has got it has been being flogged to those who do not expect much from a PC. All they appear to need is OpenOffice and the internet.

Specs  :
630mhz Celeron (likely overclockable)
512mb DDR  (possibly upgradable to 1gb)
Intel GMA 900 graphics
4GB solid state storage (expandable by memory card slots , USB etc.)

The ultimate budget machine , once you mod it with a good , stripped down install of XP or windows 2000 and extra memory card for storage you have a respectable device.

While this obviously can't compete with a conventional notebook when it comes to gaming and usability... Contrast it with say... an Iphone, PSP or a nintendo DS:
You can load up SNES , N64 and Playstation ROMS .
Starcraft, WoW , Warcraft , Diablo , Quake , Counterstrike 1.6 , unreal 2004.... a fair amount of games will work on it.

Of course, like a true gosu-l33t, I just HAD to install XP on it.
With such a small HDD, some compromises had to be made.
Asus was gracious enough to provide a DVD with ALL the device
drivers, so installing XP (with an external DVDRW drive) was a cinch.

Asus put a lot of thought into the design of this device.  The inclusion
of 3 USB ports and a SD-card slot means that you can expand the on-board
storage any way you find convenient.  An 8 GB SDHC card 'does the deed'
in this case.  All non system programs get installed here.

Screen resolution is a small, but respectable 800 x 480.

Even with only 512 MB of DDR2-667 RAM, I was still able to optimise it so that at bootup,
only about 260 MB of physical RAM is in use.  An interesting point of note here is that
the RAM is easily upgradeable up to 2 GB (667 only though).

So now I have a fully functional, sub-sub-notebook.  PERFECT for use on the job as a field
technician, and also as a nice little multimedia powerhouse.

Best $400 US I ever spent, and only 139 TT to have it in your hand (no VAT/duty).

the week past i saw an ad in a local daily newspaper or the highly anticipated eeepc laptop
the price for us trinis... $3500.00
looked it up on amazon.... 299 usd
and that was the retail price not the reseller or wholesale price
best i order a few at 299 each say 5 so i get a bulk shipping discount, no vat or duties it go cost me 350usd each shipped to my front door i could then make a thousand dollar profit on each unit and still sell it for less than them fellas

LOL @ $3500.  The 4G model (with the webcam) costs $399 US on Amazon, and it cost me roughly $150 TT to get it here in TnT.
You can get that Eee PC, PLUS an 8 GB SDHC memory card for about $3080 TT.

So if they selling the 2G model for $3500 TT.....well it goes without saying.  RIP-OFFFFFFFFFFF!!!

By the way, this thing absolutely shines when the RAM is upgraded to 1 GB.  Only the 4G version is RAM-upgradeable however.
