Well the Underworld series can be considered a cult franchise, since it's not very good but a good amount of peeps seem to like it, most likely for the reasons you stated above (kate and whatnot).
And well even though Evolution sucked, looks like it was decent enough and brought in enough dough for another sequel to get greenlighted.
