Multiplayer Excellence (PC)
« on: October 24, 2007, 01:58:50 PM »
Guys,

Since GATTs inception we have played more games than the number of gamers we could fit into Crixx's car. (which is a near infinite amount). In recent times, most of them come with a multiplayer component of some sort.

My question is which of these have achieved multiplayer excellence in your opinion?

Apart from brilliant graphics, gripping storyline and solid net code, I am talking about a multiplayer experience that shines above the rest and etches itself in the corner of your brain reserved for things that give a warm and fuzzy feeling.

The games that defined (or redefined) your sweat experience over the years.

I'll start the ball rolling by naming a few obvious ones that touched my heart (and quite likely those of most everyone on this site)

Starcraft
Quake 3
FEAR
Soldier of Fortune 2
Savage
Battlefield 2
DOTA
C&C Generals
Dawn of War

Feel free to go into detail in your selections.

Will be an interesting exercise to attempt placing them into some sort of order after coming up with the "hit list"

For me personally, it would have to be Battlefield 2/2142 and the almighty Call Of Duty series. :notworthy:

Well i've noticed COD is noticably absent from the list. Can't forget that. Personally, im putting a lot of faith in Crysis and COD4 multiplayer since i'm buying those titles. I suspect those will keep me busy well into the new year.

Talking about that, a pardner hook me up with a beta Crysis MP key, will be trying that as soon as I download it.

Call of Duty is also my choice (why is the CoD2 server on the Game Sweats section being neglected?!?!). I am yet to experience a good BF2 game though, which nobody seems to want to play.

Am also heavily into old school shooters like Serious Sam  (well it's old school for me). There is only a small community of us that still play this but it's still a lot of fun.
You have part of my attention - you have the minimum amount.

ah yes, Unreal Tournament. Another slick piece of multiplayer goodness.

Still remember Facing Worlds, that was a sweet CTF map. Gorgeous to look at and fun to play.

2004 brought some good times with the onslaught mode. you on the money there boy apprentice.

Gonna come out of left field with this addition: Tetris Multiplayer!

lol, had some intense battles on the lan. 6 player tetris mayhem.

You hit that home right there....
Thats the ultimate CTF map....

I remember playing that map continously in the first Unreal (2000)..
And then it got reincarnated...

omg!

* NoobGoneWild commits seppuku for forgetting ravenshield.

Tom clancy has majority ownership of my base.

Some of the greatest multiplayer moments. Rogue Spear, Rainbow Six, Ravenshield.

Nice one berserk.

ah boy, Halo CE. Definitely should be included.

Trini and berserk, you guys should be slapping everyone in this thread for not mentioning Half Life and it's spawn of mp games (counterstrike/dod/tf/etc..). A must on any pc multiplayer game list, no doubt. CS almost single handedly created Pro PC Gaming. (starcraft and quake helped, lol)

hhahah @ hitman jim on the level of the cpu in tetron.

I've been extremely disappointed in pc game developers for years.

See the most profound experience i've had in multiplayer pc gaming was way back in quake 2 multiplayer cooperative with a steady level/story progression.

Since then Halo on the xbox did it for me, and the pc version completely neglected that.

I think there's SOOO much room to explore in multiplayer cooperative.  The closest that other games have gotten to it, without explicitly having that, would be unreal tournament's assault matches.

Back in college, My friends and i would go coop vs pc in starcraft and generals. What's kept us together since was guildwars. For us it was aim with monsters to slay ;)

If I had to pick a deathmatch slaughter today, I'd pick team fortress 2.

Still, I'm just sad to see how much multiplayer cooperative situations have been neglected. There's just something so awesome about being part of a story playing with a friend vs doing it alone.
:P random text doesn't go out of date does it?

Starcraft - the ONLY RTS i really play. There have been few others (Rise of Nations Rise of Legends, World in Conflict, Warcraft 2....) but nothing to hold me like SC does

Quake 3 - the mac daddy daddy mac of FPS in the late 90's till UT came out....and men real bawl.

THe rest on noob's list.....no, no, no....nope....no......SOF 2? HELLLLL NO......no no :(
