Who uses Dual Boot?
« on: October 14, 2007, 07:53:56 PM »
Recently my mom brought home a Mac book ( it is very sleek i must say, didnt even spot it when i came home) and it has this amazing thing on it. A dual boot system that lets you choose  between two operationg systems, OSX and XP. I found that very cool and its inciting me to get a Mac book for myself, if not a Macbook PRO. I found the site that brought out the software its called Onmac.net. the software is a free download i think (correct me if 'm wrong) .javascript:void(0); Now is there anynone here on gatt that uses this program?

Well, I can tell you that javascript:void(0); is most definitely not the program (or link) you're talking about...the software that allows dual booting on the Mac is called Boot Camp, and yes, it is a free download. It only works on the Intel Macs if I recall correctly. Only other Mac users will be able to give you their take on it since it only works on Macs. Not sure how many of those users we have here...

There was one time when  had this Multi-boot setup:

DOS, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Mandrake Linux. each on it own partition.I

If I had to do it again, well Vista would replace Windows 98

As for your particular setup, see here for Apple's Bootcamp:

http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/

Doesn't look too hard to do.... If i ever got me a mac mini, i'd try it

BTW apple (with the release of their latest iteration of their OS) will REQUIRE that you upgrade to it otherwise you will not officially be covered by their warranty using bootcamp. The latest iteration of their OS has bootcamp BUILT IN so no need to worry if you have it or have access to the upgrade. Just thought i'd let you know that.

yeh .. rockin it on my laptop  a couple weeks now...
it aight.. i eh bother to check out compiz and what not cuz i lil busy these days, and i eh in the mood to break X.. LOL
one thing that stood out, was the installation of 'restricted modules'  you have a lil applet that comes up, and gives u checkboxes with the drivers u need.. like the ati or nvidia driver, ur wireless driver.. etc..

real nice.

but i got blown away by Suse 10.3, tho.. slapped that on the desktop...  ubuntu's installer was givin real trouble to work with my board ( shocker.. i think it was the integ. gfx)   so i revisited suse 10.2.... and i was suitably impressed to check out 10.3... which is.. the bomb..
full review to come soon ( if someone eh beat me to it..lol)

betas, young padawan.. betas.. LOL

nah. betas have been available for months, of course, you eh go use that in you main system.. things will break.. and often..
i was using the beta before the release candidate. which was right before the final... like the 4th or 5th one.. i doh play up with early builds.

http://software.opensuse.org/

if you choose cd install ( as opposed to dvd) you gonna have the choice between KDE and Gnome..

check on the software review thread, i think it should have a description as to what they are..
i personally like KDE.. but thas me.

Running it since it came out. It's really good.  Almost everything works, and the almost is because i'm running the 64-bit which is a bit more work at times (skype, flash, java) but that's 64-bit's fault really. Compiz fusion's desktop effects are so sweet.

Put suse 10.3 on my laptop. It's really nice. Yum Meta Packages are a brilliant idea. Gives you the best of both worlds, repositories and single installers
