True, but didn't the X3 720 perform on par, or a little better than some Core 2 Quads?

What I was pointing out is a direct comparison between this X4 and the X3.  They both cost about the same.
The X4 has one more core, but no L3 cache, so I was just wondering which CPU was actually better
at that particular price point.

As with all things multicore, performance will vary on application. The Athlon II X4 may be a better option if you need more threads and are not cache dependent. I suppose more office and business related apps. Gaming however is known to be cache dependent. Also keep in mind that it OCs well. I'd still lime with a X3 720 because its unlocked. I really do hope for a 6 core drop in AM2+/AM3 socket replacement next year though!

Sadly it's not actually the first quad they made to hit the 99USD mark. The original 9600BE based on the original error on all Phenom I was found on newegg for 99USD, I know cause I put it into a system. It IS however the first to DEBUT at the sub 100USD price range. And now that i've read the review, I think this was a good move, it's cheapest Quad compete favourably to the cheapest intel quad at 40% less. Can't beat that.

Very nice comparison here at Tom's detailing the performance difference between the Athlon II X4 and Phenom II X4.

The results might surprise you.  Certainly surprised ME.

So the long and short here is, as far as gaming goes (less you pack the bestest of the best Core i7 and GTX 275 and better or HD4890 or better) the Athlon II X4 is comparable to the Phenom II X4 which is comparable to any mainstream and even sometimes high end intel rig for gaming. But with a 100USD bill it offers MAXIMUM bang for buck. Niceness

Anyone have any more info on the new Turion II mobile cpus, I found some info that there will be different version depending on the laptop platform. But no info on how they perform compared to the current Puma cpus.

thanks for the links this is one i haven't sen before, i have been also researching this myself but ran out of sources with viable information. I see newegg starting to list new laptops with the new chip Turion II M5XX and it seems like some good deals especially since its new tech, ranging $500-$800.

More budget chips:

Quote
AMD releases cheap chips
Eight Athlon II processors
By Nick Farrell
Tuesday, 20 October 2009, 10:43

AMD HAS RELEASED eight new processors in its Athlon II line, targeting the budget conscious.

In the range are three-core CPUs and two energy-efficient 45-watt CPUs intended for mainstream mini-towers, small form-factor PCs, and all-in-one systems.

AMD claims that the US in particular wants smaller form-factor PCs, with all-in-ones becoming more important. Apparently the first PC is rarely a desktop as that is number two or three on the shopping list.

The key to getting into the all-in-one market is low power so that it is possible to kill off cooling fans, Chimpzilla says.

The Athlon II processors aim to compete against Intel's midrange line of CPUs.

There is a $77, two-core, 2.8GHz Athlon II X2 240e which is being aimed at Intel's $119, 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo E7400 and the $87, three-core, 2.9GHz Athlon II X3 435 that's going up against Intel's $190, 3.16GHz Core 2 Duo E8500.

Today's announcement follows the release of AMD's Athlon II X4 620 which was the first sub-$100 four-core CPU, priced at $99 and running at 2.6GHz with a TDP of 95 watts.

The Athlon II X4 630 was made available at the same time and had the same specs but had a slightly faster 2.8GHz clock speed and AMD was flogging that for $122. µ

AMD trying everything, including the proverbial kitchen sink, but they just can't seem to
supplant them i7s at all.  I must admit though...the architecture is sound.

It may very well take two more CPU generations to surpass Intel's current high-end dominance.
