He coulda win it if ONLY he didn't mis-spell 'billion'.

The comparison to the sun is rather apt.  That CPU just as hot. :laughing7:

AM3 Phenom IIs listed
The full retail and OEM monty
By Paul Taylor
Saturday, 31 January 2009, 01:20

OUR NOW-FAVOURITE Dutch etailer (and probably the only one we know) has started listing 3 new AM3-based Phenom II, ahead of Monday's launch. These are the Phenom II X4 810, X3 720 Black Edition and X3 710.

The X4 810 is listed for €174, the X3 720 BE for €143 and the X3 710 for €124. Which places them just below tphenom-ii-listinghe current X4 920.

But what about the UK, you ask? Well the CCL Computers on-line store has also started listing the processors at £159.69, £131.46 and £112.63 respectively, which means us Brits aren't getting the short end of the stick.

Then on the distri side of things, ASI Partner in North America also lists two additional models, the X4 805 (2.5GHz, 2MB+4MB cache, 95W) and the X4 910 in OEM. This puts the €uroland pricing into a bit of perspective.

Look at this table:

asi-partner-listing

You can see that the lower-end 910 and 805 don't have retail equivalents and will likely never have. Which explains why AMD skipped directly from the X4 810 to the X4 920 in terms of price.

All these processors are based on the same 45nm Deneb cores amd sport the vaunted DDR3 memory controller that AMD hopes will close the gap between them and Intel. As we'd announced before, the specs seem to be spot on. Salland, however, announces a 6MB L3 cache on the X4 810 (sounds like they mixed total cache just then), this is most likely a typo.

Let's see how many of these reach the market, as AMD went on record saying they were cutting back a bit on production due to current market conditions. That tri-core Black Edition 2.8GHz processor with some decent overclocking potential should be worth the €143 they're asking for it. µ

There are also screen captures in the actual article... this month aye... considering the 910 is going to be OEM only... that could mean I have to go 925... price will decide!

Nice review of AM3, just read the conclusion:
Quote
Conclusion

We have two new components in play here. First are AMD's new triple- and quad-core Phenom II processors. Second is Asus' Socket AM3-based M4A79T.

If you take Socket AM3 out of the picture, the new Phenom IIs mainly serve to fill in and update AMD's processor lineup with its 45 nm technology. Because they drop right into AM2/AM2+ motherboards, you could almost ignore the fact that they sport 938 pins and just be happy AMD is augmenting the mid-range and entry-level nooks in the Phenom family with chips loaded with more cache, higher clocks, and significantly improved scalability.

But there's also the AM3 interface itself to consider. AMD doesn't necessarily think the Phenom II + DDR3 story is fully baked yet. Even though we saw respectable throughput gains in shifting from DDR2 to DDR3, those increases don't necessarily translate into real-world performance improvements. Nevertheless, our benchmark results certainly weren't damning of DDR3. In fact, in most cases, the Phenom II X4 810--the 2.6 GHz processor with a stripped-down 4 MB L3 cache--was able to outperform our simulated Phenom II X4 910 with its full 6 MB cache. Moreover, we saw plenty of evidence in our system power tests to indicate that Phenom II and DDR3 together yield one of the most efficient performance platforms we've had the chance to test.

With that said, adopting AM3 does require one of the Phenom IIs being introduced today. It'll also necessitate a motherboard like the Asus M4A79T Deluxe with an AM3 interface. And you'll need DDR3 memory, which remains significantly more expensive than DDR2. Given no real tangible performance gains and really only the energy savings of which to speak, stepping up to a fully AM3-compatible platform, not surprisingly, doesn't make sense today.

What does make sense is the Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition on an existing AM2/AM2+ setup, leveraging cheap DDR2 memory. Gone are the days of Core 2 Duo's dominance over the value-oriented gaming market. Now that AMD has its hat in the ring, there's a lot more to like about the oddness of three cores.

Pay particular attention to the gaming scores and how well these new Processors meet up to the Intel challenge (AMD is back in business)

I think 'back in business' is stretching the truth a little there W1ntry.

I know how bad you want AMD to succeed, but all the 'gains' that AMD may have gotten with
these new Phenom II CPUs were wittled away with Intel's recent price cuts.

Now, don't get me wrong, the new CPUs are very competitive, technically, but again,
whatever advantages are there at stock, are negated when you factor in the overclocking.
Sure, an X4 will look better in the benchmarks, but where the performance matters to
the mainstream, performance, and enthusiast market segments, AMD will get licks in sales.

I can still get a P45 motherboard, and a Intel E8400, for less than a Phenom II X4 with a 780G/790G motherboard.
Consider also, that I can OC said E8400 to 4 GHz, and it will run circles around that X4 in gaming, which is the
primary reason that these CPUs are purchased for anyway.

Its good that AMD is now competitive, but only just.  I aint fooling nobody when I say that I won't
even consider AMD CPUs (for myself), even as a cheaper option, because Intel offers chipsets/CPUs that exist
in every segment, with comparable or better performance, variety, scalability and overclockability.

I have re-written this response more than once now and I am just going to leave it simple, Arc your intel bias is starting to show. The new Phenom II chips are much more scalable, overclockable and there are going to quite a variety in teh 800 and 900 series. So instead of answering all that you wrote I rather just say that you aren't doing your homework well enough as AMD Phenom II IS a very viable alternative to Core 2.

And keep in mind you can upgrade to AM3 CPUs using a AM2+ motherboard, lemme see you go Core i7 with your P45.

Nah man, no bias there.  I upgrade so often that I'm not very forward looking.  I simply want the better (current) performing stuff for my money, and Phenom ain't it.

I applaud AMD for making the AM3 CPUs backward compatible with AM2+ mobos (only..not AM2).
I live on Tom's, Anandtech and Tech Report, but I'll let that 'homework' comment slide :).

As for 'viable alternative', it depends on who you talk to.  It just aint viable to me right now.
Just my opinion.

Have to wait on AM3 mobos to be widely available, no sense in investing in a platform that I can't continue to move forward on. I am figuring march. As for which I am thinking 925 actually (8MB L3 cache) otherwise take a X3 BE at a cheaper cost and use that till they come out with newer silicone on the AM3 platform.
