Tera-Discs To Blow Away Blu-Ray and HD-DVD?
« on: August 28, 2007, 07:31:44 AM »
Well, from the name, you can guess the capacity of this new disc...

Quote
Blu-ray and HD DVD have pushed the limits of optical storage further than anyone thought possible. But a new technology has emerged which makes Blu-ray’s 50GB capacity look tiny. Mempile in Israel says it’s able to fit an incredible 1TB of data onto one “TeraDisc” which is the same size as CDs and DVDs. That’s 20 times the capacity of a maxed-out dual-layer Blu-ray disc.

The incredible capacity achieved using this new technology is made possible by employing 200 5GB layers, each one only five microns apart. The discs are completely transparent to the red lasers which are used in the associated recorder.

How much data?

On a 1TB disc, you could store:

212 DVD-quality movies
250,000 MP3 files
1,000,000 large Word documents

Can you say, “HOLY CRAP”?

I can...holy crap! Sweet tech! Still, by the time this becomes available to the masses, im pretty sure it will still work out better to just buy a 1tb hdd (since by then the price'll drop) and not to mention the hdd route is a hella more reliable than opical discs.

It's no surprise that many will die with the coming shortage of food

With regards to technology, always tell yourself the only way to go is 'up'.
Don't be surprised if TBs become the new standard of data storage in the near future.

From what I've heard, though, Blu-Rays are beginning to become dead in the water.
Many manufacturers seem to be moving away from that format in favour of the HD-DVDs...at least, in the entertainment biz.

I'd expect the price of one of those discs at this current point in time to be about $100-$120 per blank. Probably more, given the current standard for storage.

Blu Ray is supposed to be outselling HD-DVD 2 to 1 thanks to the Ps2....

Its a toss up to say  which one will be dominant

Doubt these disks will catch on anytime in the near future  .

It will cost too much to dump HDVD/ Blu ray in favour of another format

Plus there is no market for that much storage outside hardcore users.

Big industry already has tape drives which are probably more reliable .

Yeah but in the future i wouldnt be suprised if this becomes a normal standard for Cds i mean look at how far we've come from the 3 1/2 floppy xD or the even bigger one lmao. As NEO says with technology the only way to go is up lol.

PS2?

I dont know that any one format is outselling the other by as much as twice. In any event, this new disc is not meant to replace BD or HD anytime in the near future. The main ppush to go to these formats was the increased file size of high def content. For a move to any other high capacity format to be considered, another higher standard format has to come to the fore that will take advantage of the larger capacity. Can anyone say super high def? In the mean time, however, such a format could very well be the thing that replaces the antiquated tape drive for backup tech, or it could even make its way to the consumer market for backup purposes.

With Transformers at the helm of this exclusivity agreement..we have to go buy hd-dvd players now...
