Fourteen die in China bridge collapse, 65 missing

BEIJING (Reuters) - At least 14 people were killed and 65 were missing after a bridge under construction in southern China collapsed, state media said on Tuesday, adding that 400 police had been sent to the scene to keep order.

Twenty-two people were injured in the collapse of the 320-metre (1,000-foot) bridge, which blocked a highway during the evening rush hour on Monday.

The bridge was being built in Fenghuang county, a popular tourist destination in southeastern Hunan province. It was scheduled for completion this month.

The cause of the accident was under investigation, Xinhua news agency said.

Hunan's provincial governor, Zhou Qiang, and Vice-governor Xu Xianping were on their way to the site, it added.

The bridge's collapse came as state media reported that China would fix more than 6,000 damaged or dangerous bridges across the country. A bridge collapse in June in the southern province of Guangdong killed nine people.

Yes, horrible for the World's economy, China is going to slowly lose face and cheap will no longer be GOOD for business, as more and more business will end up getting major lawsuits over lead painted toys, to death by bridge, cheap automobiles that squish like they made out of paper when they in a crash, poisonous food products, what's next? Leaking plutonium and nuclear meltdown???!!??? GEEZ!

oh and the death of cheap manufacturing while having an adverse side effect to RIDICULOUSLY HIGH profit margins, will have the upside of using SAFER materials and processes.

SO the trade off between ridiculously high profit margins and SAFER products hmmmmmm
