Trinidad and Tobago ready for a VOIP company?
«
on:

Hey people, I was just wondering what the views of the Gaming community was on this topic, do you think Trinidad would be ready for a full scale launch of a company providing Voip services as at a cheap rate?...
Discuss.

no we not because legislation allows only tstt to control such an activity and tstt's stance is that they are thoroughly against it.
So until legislation changes. MEh

If anyone can locate where there is a legislation prohibiting that, I would love to see the document

I would have to presume this means a VOIP carrier service available to the public over either existing or NEW infrustructure? cause otherwise i'd have to say lots of places have VOIP solutions in their offices. The company I work for is big into VOIP and we have large customers that use VOIP through branch offices to main offices. In fact if I am not mistaken crixx your company usese such a system... (BG right?) so I would have to determine ultimately what bsensei defines as a FULL VOIP company.

Not necessarily business customers, but more on a residential scale...

Well if you think of it, residents already have access to VOIP services, ala Skype.

I'm going to say NO!
the average trini ( take no offence ) doesn't know what voip is, how it will benifit them
we don't have the infrastruture in place to support it ( tstt )
High startup costs will mean high initial costs will mean people won't buy into it ( I mean I know soooo many ppl on dial up sharing accounts cause it's just too much to pay $350 for dsl, they all make $6,000 a month or more )
Tstt will be a PITA with interconnection ( look at digicell! ) and throw legislation at you ( the legislation actualy doesn't say no to voip, it says something like at the discression of Tstt and they gonna say no! that and you damn well know tstt is gonna just not co-operate even when forced by legislation )

nah well, from what i understand, tstt have a monopoly on fixed line only...
voip will be data.. they were bennin off those call centers, yes , cuz they piggy-backin on their infrastructure..but they never shut them down outright....
but if flow were to get their own fiber outta here, it mightn;t be a scene? tstt would have nary a thing to do with it..
i remember a while aback, there was this survey tstt did.. about providin extra services, like IPTV an ish like that.. couple years ago..
anyhow.
i just speculating.. i dunno my arse from my elbow with the exact nitty-gritty on this. lol

Actually prowl, I am pretty sure its easy for flow to support it. And as far as the end user goes, the thing about VOIP is you don't NEED to know how it works. They put a IP Phone in ur home, done. Works like a regular phone everything is done transparently. And as for the infrustructure being able to handle it... thats a mixed answer. I am positive areas of Trinidad have the infrustructure to handle it (read POS) but there is no real reason to. You do realize that it would work over DSL right? yuh don't need 256k to carry voice signals, esp VOIP signals. So if you think about it, DSL is spreading slowly but surely, its reached the majority of populated areas in T&T and you don't need to hit foreign servers to host it, thus a VOIP system to the masses is feasible I am sure.

What Prowl said.
TSTT certainly wont have ANY voip services on their network except for
their own, and will make sure that any other entity that manages to establish
ther own network/infrastructure will have a serious fight to allow any kind of interconnection deal.
So I would say...NO.
We not ready yet.

well some info for ya
fiber links Americas 1 and 2 which Tstt uses has a capacity of 80 gig b/s
Tstt only ( 2006 ) uses 2.5 gb/s
Tstt also has leases on some other fiber links with 20 gb/s signed capacity, but only use a fraction of that.
The rest of their unused bandwidth is resale
they ripping us off big time, and making tonnes of cash! they could easily do voip ( at least as far as their out going bandwidth goes ) hummmmmm!!!!

I'm pretty sure they do actually...the reason I say so is that sometimes when people call me from back home, their number shows up as 18680000000, or 18681234567, or a local number here in Calgary...rather than their actual number which used to be the norm a year ago...all indicators that TSTT isn't always routing the call through the traditional setup...

Let's make a long story short, we SHOULD be 1 of the most advanced caribbean islands (though we are I know, but so much more) and have top notch telecomunication services not to mention ALOT of others. I UNFORTUNATELY have to interact with TSTT every now and again and it has always BEEN A LAME @$$ experience. I've always known TSTT has capacity to burn... shame they SHAFTING us so badly eh... its a TRINI mentality... shaft we bredren till competition cmes along and then shaft them as much as we can in line with the competition... sighs...

that statement should be more like shaft hard while you can and vex everybody, when competition come make them look bad and shaft from a side. at least that's how i see it. any how, no i doubt one will work for the simple reason that trini's can't handle change that and we go on hear say too much so when we hear we partner say he try to make a call and get a weird message, we'll tell all of our relatives it bad. so no we'll stick to what tstt taking out they bum and swallow it like cakes, why? i really have no idea maybe one of you know but i really have no clue.
wait a minute... nope i still have no idea.
