aight.. i don't trust WD further that the distance between the platters and the r/w head ,
but due to time, cost contraints, and the ever-expanding need for storage  i may have to purchase one of these "things"..

from the looks of things i supposed you as lucky with WD as i am with Lite-ON...

Never see a prob with them, if i had to say one prob, it would be the presence of both molex and sata pwr, many ah man get ketch with that.
Other than that drives run well for the price.
Seeing as you dont trust them, yuh could check prw i think they get a nice setta segates in

i got one of the 250GB SATAII drives, and when i first started using it, i honestly thought something was wrong with it!! it 'clunks' on start-up & shut-down, the temperature varies 12C during operation!! (compared to my Seagate which only varies 2C)

...so far it hasn't failed, but the operating behaviour leaves alot to be desired!!

I've used lots of WD hard-drives, and the brand is recommended by Tom's Hardware, so I cant see
any problems using em.  That said, my preference is still Seagate though, but I'll still buy a WD any day
over a Maxtor (ugh).

ditto for me.. though now that Seagate OWNS Maxtor, I wonder if Maxtor's quality will improve.

I currently use 2 Seagates (160GB and 500GB) ans 2 Hitachis (2 X 250GB) in my 1TB of storage system

dem hitachis still use both moles and sata power, so be careful or you end up like me...

Personally, i've liked Maxtor drives, they've all served me well without failure, i've also used Hitachi drive and those are still ticking. I've seen a fair amt of WD drives kick the bucket and i've had 1 Seagate go semi-dead. Seagate are good drives but they run HOT.... I doh mind samsung, though i've seen a few of those go dead too. I usually stay away from WD.

Further to this topic...

Common hard-drive myths dispelled.

Apparently, hitting your hard-drive, or freezing it, cannot help once it has failed.  Who knew?

That's a damned lie, I tell you. LIES!!

Freezing  AND hitting on separate occasions (one time each) have allowed me to recover data... but honestly I haven't had cause to use such extreme jutsus in a couple of years

I'v used  2 WD hard drives , a 20 gig and a 200 . The 200 is about  3 years old and going strong , 20 gig lasted 4 years or so before it conked out .

You'll always get a small percentage of bad drives from each company , can't blame any for your bad luck .
