A GERMAN WOMAN who has spent the last 55 years with a pencil stuck in her brain is recovering in hospital after doctors successfully removed the object, reports Reuters. Margret Wegner fell over while running with the pencil when she was four.
"It went right through my skin – and disappeared into my head," said the woman. At the time, doctors had pretty much written off any chance of extracting the pencil without causing brain damage, but medical techniques have improved to the point where doctors were lead to believe the operation could be safely carried out.
Details of the operation are sketchy, but approximately three inches of pencil was removed at a Berlin clinic. A further inch had to be left behind, doctors noted, in biro. µ
