U.K. schoolgirl loses ‘virginity ring’ court battle.

Lydia Playfoot says ring should be exempt from school ban on jewelry.

LONDON - A teenager whose teachers had stopped her wearing a “purity ring” at school to symbolize her commitment to virginity has lost a High Court fight against the ban.

Lydia Playfoot, 16, says her silver ring is an expression of her faith and had argued in court that it should be exempt from school regulations banning the wearing of jewelry.

“I am very disappointed by the decision this morning by the High Court not to allow me to wear my purity ring to school as an expression of my Christian faith not to have sex outside marriage,” Playfoot said in a statement Monday.

“I believe that the judge’s decision will mean that slowly, over time, people such as school governors, employers, political organizations and others will be allowed to stop Christians from publicly expressing and practicing their faith.”

Series of disputes
Playfoot’s legal challenge was the latest in a series of disputes in British schools in recent years over the right of pupils to wear religious symbols or clothing, such as crucifixes and veils.

Last year, the Law Lords rejected Shabina Begum’s appeal for permission to wear a Muslim gown at her school in Luton. That case echoed a debate in France over the banning of Muslim headscarves in state schools.

Playfoot’s parents are key members of the British arm of the American chastity campaign group the Silver Ring Thing, a religious group which urges abstinence among young people.

Those who sign up wear a ring on the third finger of the left hand. It is inscribed with “Thess. 4:3-4,” a reference to a Biblical passage from Thessalonians which reads: “God wants you to be holy, so you should keep clear of all sexual sin.”

I disagree with this decision to a great extent. >_<

I agree that a few US soldiers have done some horrible things to Iraqis. This is in turn should naturally make some Iraqi fearful of US troops and that's perfectly fine.

I say it is a rather tough call.

On one side you have a girl's right to free speech to declare that "I'm a virgin" by use of a ring. I mean freedomof speech is what most western societies are made of.

On the other side, you have chiristian fanboys rubbing their beliefs in your face while at school....and trying to influence you to do same
" Oh! so you're a virgin. Do you really need a ring to keep your legs closed? I don't care! Ring's probably fake gold anyway. Go ... over there in that corner with your friends or something."

At least in such "secular" states we can debate these issues in a court of law.

They'd have long impaled her a$$ if she tried that in Bahrain.

either yuh support all, or you support none....
so i agree with the decision..

when she home, and she out, she could rock it...

but it opens the door for other things to be supported at school if they 'llow her....... nobody tellin her not to abstain, or not believe in christ.. is all well and good....

when men rockin flyin spaghetti monster t-shirts, and everyone upset, the school go hadda 'llow that..cuz the man believe in the message of Pasta. lol

besides.. is not like if she doh have the ring on , then she cah be chaste, as sax says...  thas between you and your god..

and also, with regard to the muslim hijabs and burquas ( the whole gown business ), on that grounds, the state go hadda 'llow it...  cuz i mean.. the main purpose of those garments is chastity, not so?

meh..

It reminds me of when I was in secondary school, with their policy for jewellery.

If it was made of precious metal (doesn't matter what it stood for), it was usually disallowed.

If it wasn't made of precious metal, and was something relating to religious views or beliefs, it could be worn, as long as it was out of sight from plain view.

Is it so hard to do something like taking out a ring while in school, and if you want to still have it, sure it's good that she wants to do something public to express her opinion, but then again, I REALLY doubt that her not wearing that ring is going to make her turn into Jenna Jameson :P.

There are things that can be considered religiously necessary, and some items that are truly frivolous, and something like a chastity ring definitely falls into the latter category.

I agree with the decision I mean come on Muslims cant get to wear their veils, but because you are a so called Christian you could wear jewelery. PFTT get real put it away when you walk through the gate and put it back on when you leave.

This argument about stifling you Christianity is pure horse manure ( In My Opinion ) now if they were saying that you cant make the sign of the cross or clasp your hands when you pray then that is a different story. People these days seem to forget that Christianity is not a fashion statement but a way of life, and all the jewelry and WWJD Tee shirts and golden rosary's dont make you a better Christianity. Heck most of the die for your belief Christians have none of that stuff.

I my experience so-called Christianity is just a fashion statement like you said, go to church for the sake of going but doing everything the 'ungodly' people do. I call it HYPOCRISY and I have contempt for people who use Christianity (or any religion) as a tool. If you are a certain way, good or bad, fine, but don't use religion as a mask for your own goals. It's the primary reason why I don't go to a church and don't have 'allegiance' with a particular Christian religion.

*W1nTry walks in thread.... walks out shaking head*

There are pros and cons to this, but since the court has chosen to uphold its ruling then I say let it be.

PS this thread won't get sticky, i'll see to it myself if I have to.
