DAAMIT expected to do triple-slot Crossfire

THE RUMOUR MILL in Ol' Tapei is spinning out of control this week, as we hear that the folks at DAAMIT are working on a triple-slot Crossfire platform that will harness the power of three GPUs to render a single display.

Of course, triple CrossFire isn't anything new - at Computex 2006, the firm showed off how a third Radeon card could be added to an exisitng CrossFire setup to process physics. Of course, no software actually appeared to support that platform and, like Nvidia's similar propaganda attempt, the fad for calculating physics in a three-card GPU setup appears to be dead in the consumer space, even if GPGPU is taking off in workstations and HPC.

Nonetheless, some are saying that the introduction of HyperTransport 3 and PCI Express 2 to to the RD790 chipset will enable this feature, and will see CrossFire performance leap from 1.8x single card to 2.6x.

Expect motherboards to hit the market in Q4 this year using the 790, and early samples to leak into the rivers of the hardware review sites a little before then. Is triple-threat CrossFire a wet dream or a wash out? We're sure the Green Goblin will be watching to find out. µ

I'm more interested in seeing the competition this produces in the market. Nvidia is probably already planning on bringing this to the next level with a new lineup, if this ends up being of great interest to consumers. I have my doubts about this being a success though, from this point it would be more of an unnecessary overkill with Nvidia's current lineup of G80 cards. Unless this proves to be a huge difference, I can't see the Triple Cross Fire going that far.
