Evolution...  :happy0203:

Decided to take the plunge and acquire the MSI X99S SLI Plus and the Haswell Core i7 5820K one time.
Threw em up on the test bench (with an almost 'ancient' GeForce 9800 GT).

Already whipped the 5820K into shape at a stable 4.3 GHz (at 1.35V vcore), which seems to be these hexa-core CPUs' sweet spot.
Anything above that requires a vcore setting that the Corsair Hydro H80i is not prepared to cope with.  The heat output is just too great.

Max load temp sits squarely at 80C, which I anticipated with this cooler.  I have no doubt that the triple-rad in my main system will be able to properly tame that beast.

The only thing keeping me from swapping everything in, is the thought of re-installing Windows, and the myriad amount of apps (of which I've long lost count).

Not to mention all them bloody games.

I'm thinking of doing a 'dirty upgrade' of sorts...where I simply slap everything in, and let the current Windows installation autodetect everything that it can,
and then install all the relevant X99 chipset and device drivers.  It's not pretty, but I've done it before, and sometimes it works.  Sometimes. :(
(I'll have to make a proper backup image of my OS drive before attempting such an endeavour.)

Let the games begin...

I may very well keep those parts to make up a proper, high-end test bench, and sell the current test bench CPU/mobo (4670K/ Gigabyte Z87)

Here's a direct comparison of both configs... http://www.3dmark.com/compare/fs/3954746/fs/3006795

The 5820K @ 4.3 GHz still manages to beat the 3930K @ 4.4 GHz, with all other settings (well, except RAM speed/timings) identical.
I expect the new gear to perform a LOT better if I reinstall Windows from scratch, but who has time for that?

Well i use a usb stick to reinstall windows and an available ssd makes it a go a lot faster as well.

Some of the tools you use to make a USB windows install allows you to create unattended setups as well. When u playing ur BF4 windows go be installing in d backgrong normal.

Unless u were being sarcastic.

Looking real good arc. I must say my inner "holic" kinna dying these days but yours very much alive and well. I'm looking at a skylake upgrade this year or possibly a cannonlake next year.

In the mean time though what you got there looks to be an absolute monster.

But hard, windows installing in the background while playing battlefield? I want to know how to do that lol.

I'm not referring to the speed of the OS install itself, but the downtime required to reinstall every app, every game, every setting that exists now.
It would take me at least two weeks to fully reinstall everything and have the system dialed in to my satisfaction.

As luck would have it...the 'transplant' went better than I expected.
Windows 8.1 simply detected all new devices. All I had to do was install the X99 chipset drivers, and re-install the Nvidia drivers.
System running nice and stable 'like fuss time'.

The best part?  The CPU waterblock went on without a hitch, as physically, it's the exact same socket,
and the max load temp @ 4.3 GHz (with hyperthreading) is a quite respectable 68-70C...down from 80C.  As expected.

...and so...the rig has evolved again.

The saga continues.  :)

Arc selling drugs. I am convinced now. (Cause he clearly run out of sellable organs now!)

I could barely afford to shell out US$225 just to upgrade my video card and CPU cooler.

This man pelt out a US$600 normal normal to upgrade he board and cpu, then talking about keeping the stuff he replaced (Which was a set a morney too) as a "test bench"....

One day, I will have such glory...
