So now that my SSD is on a proper SATA III interface, the read speeds are looking a bit more 'respectable'...

Here's the SATA II result for comparison.

Idle power consumption of this platform is down by more than 100W.  :awesome:
With the X58 platform, idle power usage would top out at 390W.
This is what I'm seeing now...

More win for X79.  :happy0203:

Me and TTEC could be on speaking terms again.  :laughing7:

Some more tweaking today yielded this...

3DMark results as follows...

http://3dmark.com/3dmv/4119490
http://3dmark.com/3dm11/3577581

40C idle temp?  I could live with that.
75W idle power penalty?  I could live with that too. (It's still a LOT better than the X58 kit)

Of course I still have to see how this setting holds up under some torture, and stability testing.
If it does, then 4.6 GHz will be daily operation.  :happy0203:

Ouch, 250W @ idle? Those AMD cards are really heavy on consumption.

Finally achieved stability at 4.6 GHz with some truly exotic voltage settings, but nowhere near as frustrating as X58...

The main problem though...temperature.

Apparently I was monitoring the wrong value.  Idle temp at 4.6 GHz is actually SIXTY degrees Celsius.
Prime 95/LinX had the load temp pegging NINETY-FIVE degrees, which is weird because total system power
consumption is way LOWER than the X58 platform.  There's an issue somewhere...I just haven't found it yet.
My research indicates that those temps, even at 4.6 GHz may be a bit abnormal.

I actually did that...and maybe I spoke too soon about stability at 4.6 GHz...

Sometimes Prime 95 will run for an hour or more without errors, and then other times, one or two threads will stop with an error,
so it's still iffy.  I'm beginning to think I've hit a wall where heat is winning out over stability.  I guess I'm asking too much of the H100,
but I really thought that it could take the jamming.  Sadly, this is not the case.  At 4588 MHz, I'm seeing temps of up to 98 degrees C.
Totally unacceptable.

It's interesting what effect a 'paltry' 300 MHz can have eh.
It appears that these LGA 2011 Core i7 CPUs are real monsters when you get above 4.5 GHz.

I'll be staying at 4.3 GHz until I can afford a more exotic cooling solution.

Not necessarily...

I'm looking at one of those Rasa kits...namely the XSPC Rasa 750 RS360.

Still, the extra 300 MHz isn't really that necessary, but it's the whole point of an enthusiast platform.
As soon as I can afford it...I'm getting that kit.  The nice thing about LGA 2011, is that the required installation
adapter kit means that the motherboard doesn't have to come out at all.  That's half the hassle right there.

^^ Glad you are considering my recommendation, I am slowly making everyone turn to Watercooling.. :laughing7:

Now to speed up notnicett's mind....

:laughing7:

on a more serious note.. CPU degradation will take place ALOT faster if you keep it at that speed BTW.

Ha.

I've actually been considering that particular kit for a very long time eh...even before I got the H100.

Been on the fence about using a proper watercooling kit for a longer time, and I thought the H100 was an acceptable compromise.
You know what they say...experience is the best teacher.  It's fine for your run-of-the-mill overclocking, but I want MORE dammit!

I never thought I'd say this, but "...is custom watercooling immc!!! "  :laughing7:

Expect to see the H100 up for sale before the year is out...for a bess price too.   :happy0203:

I might have finally got this biatch to behave at 4.6 GHz...

Emphasis on 'might'.  :laughing7:

I think my initial problems may have had something to do with too much Vcore.
Changed up my fan arrangements as well, and interestingly, idle/load temps have dropped by 5 degrees C,
so idle temp is now 56C, and not 61C...max load temp is now 88C, and not 93/94C.

Still nowhere near 'great', but I can live with it for now.

For this platform, I have found that Prime 95 finds instability much more quickly that LinX.
I have had certain configurations pass an hour-long  LinX run, only to get Prrime 95 rounding errors within three minutes.

All-aspect testing continues of course...

Absolutely correct. Prime has made a strong comeback from the days of athlon xp's. Ahh, the memories. It is the ONLY choice for stability testing SB-E.

Nothing less than 12 hours without failure (not the blend test, too soft) can you truly say the system is stable: http://www.carigamers.com/cms/forums/index.php/topic,11539.msg291252.html#msg291252

The fact that you have to use SOO much voltage to maintain a moderate overclock suggests that you simply got a CPU that's not 'top binned' or OC friendly. It happens.

As far as them temps go, you better chill that nugga out before thermal degredation sets in. Maybe go back to the silver arrow. You'll see much better results.
