Unfortunately, I have some devices that do not play nice with a 64-bit OS.
The most significant of those: my Turtle Beach AK-R8 5.1 channel headset.  I ain't giving that functionality up
for nothing!!!

64-bit be damned. (For now at least)

...and so, the rig has evolved again, but I guess you can call this a 'de-evolution' as I've officially removed one
of my 4870s.  Yes, really.

...and no, I'm NOT selling it (at least not yet). :laughing7:

Its become too much of a bear to keep stable.  The main issue I've been battling with since installation is the heat.
A 4870 Crossfire setup puts out so much heat, that I fear my current case (Thermaltake Armor Jr) may not be adequate.
To even get the cards to run at a respectable idle temp, I had to set the fan-speed so high, the whole thing sounded
like an F-15 on take-off.  Of course all that heat ejected into the atmosphere of my small room made it unbearable at times.

As a result, that extra 4870 has been officially put in 'storage' until I can upgrade to a substantially more uber case,
like the Cooler Master Cosmos 1000, and proper liquid cooling for GPUs and CPU.  By then, I most likely will upgrade
to Core i7 anyway, but we shall see.

Now that the second 4870 is out, overall system temps are now quite tolerable.  At 50% fan-speed, the 4870 idles
very comfortably at 53C and loads at 75C (which is atually LESS than the default idle temp).

Now my LAN rig can get some HD4870 loving.

EDIT:  Scratch that...HD4870X2 immc.  Talk done.  :happy0203:

So the X2 is in...

Stock core/mem - 750/900

Slight OC to 760/920

All I can say is god-DAMN!!!
Can't take back the top spot, but with this kind of performance, I don't really care.
I guess it goes without saying that this one card is the theoretical equal of two HD4870s.

Its a little more fussy to OC, so I'll be running this one at stock, until I decide to invest in some
liquid cooling of course.

...and OMG at Crysis Warhead performance.  40 fps easy on 'Enthusiast' settings
The game looks/runs absolutely SPLENDID now...

I admit, its not much of a change, but consider the fact that this is one card doing the 'work' of two.
and more or less equalling their performance.  Comapring this to a single 4870, well, the winnage there
speaks for itself.

umm the one card is two cards(two gpus on one board).. it must equal the performance and trounce ah single 4870... that's why it's called a 4870X2..  :icon_scratch:

I am seriously reconsidering the wisdom in getting that $550 card. Yes the benchmark numbers are great, but the real world performance increase is not quite compelling enough for me. I think I might reconsider selling off my 4870 for the hour.

Didn't you all read the part where I said
"40 fps" and "Enthusiast" ?
What do you mean 'real world'?  How much more
real world than that do you want?
