Half an hour?  Nah, you jivin me son.

I  feel Microkia probably know how much ah does cuss dem, and did this JUST to f@#k with me.

The only reason my gaming rig have Windows 8 on it is because all the games I play tend to run best (or only) on it.
Sometimes I wonder if it's really worth all this hassle.

Oh well...all will be forgotten once Battlefield 4 launches.   :laughing7:

Thought id chime in.

On my surface device, the upgrade was seamless, click go and that was it.

But on my beast machine, not so much.
Question (arc, did u run all windows updates before trying the store? Cause I've seen if u don't update windows before 8.1 upgrade, it gives issues).

That aside, I tried to install 8.1 RTM (before the official store release), and it seems like a driver or something was conflicting with 8.1, because after the upgrade, and it try to boot into windows, it would bluescreen, and after 3 consecutive bluescreens, it would roll-back the update and put me back in windows 8.0. Tried removing what think it is, and upgrading my drivers to whatever 8.1 was available at the time, but no joy.

So instead of spending time troubleshooting further, I say screw it, and just did a fresh install using an 8.1 key.
Whole process to get back up and running with all apps and settings configured was like 40 minutes. So not too bad.

8.1 Was released to Microsoft Partners about 2 months now, so I been running it for a while. Each (MS Certified) person in my company gets 5-10 keys of every product MS release. So technically, me personally, don't pay for any Microsoft software on any of my machines.

Who is this 'rest of us' that you speak of?  A hot 3 or 4 people?
Go on Microkia forums and see how much other people getting the same problem.  Them 'evil' too?

At the end of the day...I achieved what I set out to do...and learned something valuable in the process.
...and look I shared that knowledge here...so ent it probably happen for a reason?

I also now have a (legit) Windows 8.1 iso that I can install at any time.  How much 8.1 iso YOU have?  :laughing7:

Thank you kindly.  :)

I'm not saying no.  Go back and read what I said.

People with run-of-the-mill PCs had no issues.  The majority of those with issues were the ones with enthusiast-level gaming rigs.  A lot of those people simply gave up (like Messiaah self) and did a fresh install of Windows 8.1 itself from an iso.

I'm willing to bet money that out of all the Windows 8 users, only a very small fraction of those run enthusiast-level hardware...so of COURSE the number of 'smooth' upgrades will be skewed heavily in favor of the 'regular' PC owners.

That information means nothing to the many, MANY legit Windows 8 users who still tearing their hair out all now trying to upgrade from the Windows Store and hitting a brick wall.

If they don't use the method I detailed above, do you know what the alternative is...?

I'll tell you...

Microkia expects retail users to purchase a new Windows 8.1 key.
That's right...buy the OS a SECOND time because of a  deeply flawed upgrade process.
How is that even REMOTELY fair?  :(

Oh the 'Microsoft partners' could get it free...but what about the rest of us?

The rest of you? simple, yuh screwed lolol.

But like you said, this affect the very small minority.
Most of the users with enthusiast PCs could find a solution regardless. because they should be tech savy enough to do so.
If i didnt have access to a free 8.1 key, i would have gone through the same hoops as you, even though my issue was different, since i was trying to upgrade from an 8.1 iso from the offset. My issue was really simple, a driver was bluescreening it, i suspect its the firmware, because it have no windows 8.1 version of it for my board yet. So i left it off after the format, cuase every time i try to install the 8.0 version, it say not compatible. So my upgrade actually work, but i encounter other issues. In any event, the enthusiast crowd should be able to work around these issues as we have been doing for years.

The General Population is what MS shoudl be worried about, and for once in they life, Microsoft got a windows update right.......lol.

Well, that's where our opinions part ways because for me, this upgrade has been anything but 'right'.
You self had to abandon the upgrade...for whatever reason.  I call those 'issues'.

...but I understand now why you feel compelled to bat for Microkia so much.  :)
Carry on smartly.

At this stage of the game, there shouldn't be all these 'issues' just to install what is essentially a Service Pack.

Bashing for bashing sake. Go through hard.

O gorsh, when i say they finally get it right, i talking bout the general consumer.

We already establish that enthusiasts screwed for the most part.

Whiles typing this, wyatt basically post what i was going to type lolol.

This upgrade is a huge success.

And you know what funny? Microsoft Corporate treating this as a whole new version of windows.
Same applies for Server 2012 R2 (which is the 8.1 for 2012).

So getting that upgrade right for 95% of target machines, when dealing with a ginormous install base, simultaneously all over the world, ah mean come on. They did good, they did extremely good.

And any I.T. company that servicing a variety of clients that aint a MS partner, doing something wrong lolol.
We is partners with a range of ppl, from vmware go back. It dont influence my love for MS.

Good products does. (It's why i cuss hotmail and went full gmail for years, until they step up they game and fix hotmail, now i hate gmail.) But think whatever makes you feel more comfortable lol.
