Horror of horrors.  My venerable Cooler Master Real Power Pro 850W PSU has 'failed'.

After the usual nightly Battlefield run, I decided to install my newest acquisition, the
NZXT USB expansion I got earlier in the week.  Installation went off without a hitch,
tucked away all errant cables, closed up cased and pressed the power button.....

...and nothing happened.  Mobo LEDs came on, all chassis fans came on, but no boot.

The first thing that struck me was that the memory fan, and the CPU fans did not come on,
so I went through the usual routine of checking all connections.  I even took both
GPUs out, and cleared the CMOS for good measure...still nothing.

As a last resort, I pulled and reseated both mobo power connectors (24-pin and 8-pin),
and it booted.  YAY.  However, as soon as I shifted the PC back into its corner, same problem.

I pulled the 24-pin power connector again, and then spied the culprit.  The two yellow pins
closest to pin 24 were completely burnt and the plastic housing melted.  So the problem
only reared its ugly head when I physically moved the PC.

So now, my dilemma is two-faced.  I will most certainly have to replace the PSU, but will I have to replace the mobo as well?

I noticed that the corresponding pin headers on the mobo connector turned brown from the heat.  The thing is...until i moved the PC, everything was working fine.  Apparently, the problem may have been caused by bad electrical contact, which was then exacerbated by serious current load on those wires from power hungry GPUs, which, as it turns out, are the main 12V wires.

So now, I need a PSU that's at least 850W...preferably 900-1000W.

Can anyone point me in the direction of such a 1337 PSU?

Wow. That happened to your x58? That sucks. The last time that happened to me was with my Asus 570sli board and Seasonic PSU.

Instead of the 24 pin connector getting scorched, though, it was the 12volt CPU rail.

Luckily both the psu and board were still working. Last time my 750w corsair died it didn't take anything with it. I'd recommend the corsair hx850 as it is has one of the best reviews from one of the best sites around.

Check my benchie thred for more details. Besides it powers my system which is almost identical to yours.

you're kidding? Well look how I not buy that internal usb expansion header again.

Can't take chances with my battlefield rig nuh.

The psu awesome recommending looking good.

http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-CMPSU-850HX-Professional-Certified-compatible/dp/B0029F21LA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1271434579&sr=8-1

5 stars. Can't go wrong.

I find it hard to spend over US$100.00 on a PSU but then again, my system's requirements are very shy from that of Arc and Awesome's.

lol @ man down and woody coming to revive.

I still don't understand how woodyear top scoring veterans in the game. Man score always out of control.

i second captain awesome and bago  recommendation of the hx850.. or if you wanna "future proof" look into mine... the hx1000

and yes their systems definitely require spending more than $100

just pray you dont have to replace the board.. that would suck hard

p.s. and the fact that it shorted when you shifted could mean a deeper underlying issue eh.. so check everything in your case again, even what might look simple... if its good..
the spike may not be related to the psu itself... something could have shorted elsewhere during the move... and if it shorts with a simple move.. then you should look into it (i doubt u was banging up the rig)

TriniWyatt...I'm pretty sure the installation of the USB expansion didn't cause it.

Based on the looks of things...this burnout happened quite a while ago.  You can usually look at electrical burn marks and tell if they're recent or not.  A piece of the plastic shrouding the pin actually came off in my hand like it was brittle.

I'm willing to hazard a guess that it happened during some rather vicious OC'ing sessions where
I may have applied too much voltage to my 5850s.  I shall not be proceeding down THAT particular road again. :(

On a lighter note...I called Circuit Zone, and they have this Cooler Master Silent Pro M1000 for $1528.00

Luckily, I can afford it (this time) and shall waste no time in procuring it.  I know it will cost less
overall than buying/shipping the Corsair.  Not to mention, I get a 1-year warranty.  Win. :happy0203:

PSU upgrade immc by force.

Thank you Arc for you own confidence in the USB expansion. I just had to call Wyatt to allay his fears. i just successfully and uneventfully installed mine in my PC.

Arc, I hope you get that new PSU soon, which reminds me yet again to RMA my 1000W Ultra....

ive seen all sorts of PSU burnt, from the no-name codogen brands , to thermaltake, to coolermaster.
One brand dat never fail me is PC Power & Cooling, i have a 420W in a machine rel long now, and dat thing outpwerforming other 550W psu, myself and isme2003 has owned a 750W PC Power for years, which currently pushing we old machine, for years, overstressed and over used, never had an issue, and now im on pc power 1.2kw. For cheap midrange builds, i go corsair, they use the same oem (seasonic) as pc power, so they are the only other psu i trust. and from years of building rigs, a PC Power psu NEVERRRRRRRRRRR spoil on me, only started with corsiar a few years back, so dat has some time to live up to their standards, but so far so good, phoenix uses enermax and seems to be good also, but ill recomend PC Power to men who want good powerful shit, and Corsair for d men dat cant afford PC Power, dont buy d Orange branded corsair doh, different oem, Yellow and Blue branded is what yuh want. Reserach ppl RESEARCH!
