Network cams / USB Networking idea
« on: July 09, 2007, 09:59:01 PM »
Ok I just want some feedback on this to know if it will work before I spend or do anything stupid. If you take a normal USB webcam and attach it to a USB to LAN adapter then hook that to a wireless router will you be able to connect to that specific webcam and be able to see the Vid feed ?? or if any device is connected in that manner will it be useable.

In connection with that anyone has any info on where to get a wireless lan cam   or an IP cam for a good price. Or have any good info on this topic....please post up here, I'll really appreciate it.

Thank You in Advance.

I not so sure about the wireless, but I know there are USB over Ethernet solutions being used.
It may be possible, i not a big wireless fan but i assume that if the protocols on the network are the same the physical (or lack thereof) media won't matter, again I not 100% sure, a buddy of mine real into the wireless thing so I'll ask.

but for now do some research on USB over Ethernet, here is something to get your mind ah tinkering.

EDIT:
Taken from above link
Quote
It intercepts USB port activity for the shared device and redirects it via TCP/IP to a remote site, where it is handled appropriate.

Well look at that I was close, so I'd say now, yes, it looks possible.

with regards to the wireless.. aren't most USB webcams powered over the USB connection itself?

for about $84 US you can get a ethernet camera on amazon

the wireless appear to be more, but may be in your budget

hmmm ok cool THX.........I'll check out the usb over ethernet...as for the USB hub I was thinking of a wireless hub but only problem is the only one there seems to be is the belkin wireless hub and reviews on it arent so good. The range on it really does suck. **stupid idea just hit me...HUB TO HUB...wireless hub to wireless hub to wireless hub to computer :S** (I should even have typed that.)

Im checking out the usb over ethernet....when i find out more will post

BTW anyone know about good IP cams or lan cams that are cheap enough yet good enough in specs and abilities. ???

Yeah I checked out amazon but gosh the shipping and the drama and all the technicalities plus which one is a good one nehow they have a few.

Right now I'm just checking all the options and possibilities before I buy anything.
That's why I have up this post and asking

BTW THANK YOU for the help fellas.

USB to Ethernet will work but why go through all that trouble when you can just use an IP Camera. In terms of IP Cameras Avis (I think thats the name is a really good brand, you get real good video and it doesn't consume too much bandwidth.
I've worked with some of the D-links, if you don't care about the quality and bandwidth too much the dog cheap cameras can get you a decent image.
