Upgrade time again.

Specs:

Mainboard: MSI X79A-GD65 (8D)
CPU: Intel i7 3930K
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 1600Mhz (4x4gb)
Cooler: Thermalright Silver Arrow (stock push/pull, AS5 Ceramique compound)
GPU: EVGA Nvidia 680*2 (SLI), One Superclocked, one stock
PSU: Corsair HX850W
Storage: Crucial M4 128gb Sata3, WD Velociraptor 300gb
Test Bench: Doma PCI Pro

Overclocks:

Very mild so far, still getting used to the new platform so many more tweaks to come.

CPU @ 4.2 Ghz, (1.165VCore)
GPU's @ 1100 mhz, RAM clocks at stock

Couple quick pics of the setup so far:

Benchmark runs:

Vantage:

3dMark 11:

First impressions

Intel has done it again. Massive power coming from this particular CPU...and you can feel it too. Nvidia, well needs no introduction. Immediately impressed me with Kepler's performance as soon as it released. Even a single 680 WILL handle the most demanding games out there on 1080p Max settings so SLI is just future proofing, really. MSI, as usual has brought their A game in this particular board and has now become my preferred brand for price vs performance and features.

All in all, very solid platform and system that could possibly last my 3 year 'major upgrade' cycle untouched.

Power Draw

Using my Kill a WATT as a guide, with current OC settings the entire system (sans monitor) is pulling roughly 167 Watts on idle and between 500 and 550 Watts on (bf3 gaming) load. This is actually VERY good compared to my previous X58 system with dual GTX 460's which pulled between 470 and 500Watts from the wall. (granted that that system at the time had maybe 3 or 4 extra fans)

Additional comments

1) As you can see, I chose to go the air cooling route mainly because I wanted to try something a little different by running the system permanently in the test bench. As the room is airconditioned, this setup is performing admirably as even overclocked, the cpu never gets hotter than 60 degrees on full load. Very very boss performance from the Silver Arrow. The pictures probably do not properly convey the magnitude of this cooler but I assure you it is indeed  superbly humongous! Would probably eventually go with a nice custom water job but this kind of performance is satisfactory enough that I will take my sweet time to implement such a system.

2) Why the hell am I using a testbench as a permanent setup? A couple of reasons, some of which some of you will watch me cross eyed for but thats ok. Firstly, I wanted to see what it would be like. Always liked the idea of running my system in an open test bench so now I am. Am I worried about safety of my parts? Nah, not really. There are no kids and everybody understands, NOBODY touches my system but me. There are also no pets so there's zero chance of coming home to see cat pee all over my MB. Dust? I have a big electric compressor. Two minutes of that every couple weeks will keep things nice and dust free. The best advantages, though are the EPIC ventilation and the fact that I can easily cast a satisfied glance over at the naked parts in between some sweaty bf3 rounds!!

3) I'm 'only' gaming at 1080p with no plans to go 3d or multiple displays. Why SLI 680's? Well I want enough headroom so that titles currently on the market can all be completely maxed out with an absolute minimum of 60fps while simultaneously being 95% sure that any titles coming out within the next two years will receive the same treatment.

4) The ram, while at first glance appears to be Meemselfknow branded Supertech grade memory, is actually a Corsair Vengeance 1600Mhz kit with the ram sinks removed. This was done to facilitate the installation of the mandingo Silver Arrow. (Original heatspreaders are very high profile making the install of these sticks with that cooler impossible.) The plan originally was to run the system with the Corsair H80 which was purchased along with the high profile ram which would have posed no physical conflicts. While waiting on the rest of the parts the plan changed and decided to go with the Silver Arrow instead which does not allow for high profile memory installs in certain slots hence the reason for the heatspreader removal.

If you've made it this far, thanks for reading! Feel free to leave comments and/or questions below!

Outstanding, good sir!

*massive applause..*

Just note that Corsair does indeed have a low-profile version of the Vengeance, which I myself am using...

^^ I know. I originally planned to use a Corsair H80 cooler in which case it would not have mattered which ram I used, however during planning I changed my mind (already had the vengeance in hand) and went with the SA, introducing that new problem.

Massive upgrades...the numbers exceeded my expectations.

I think you good to go for another 3 years on that platform, but I KNOW you... :laughing7:

NICE!

Thats what i like to see man, competition in we ass.
First chinee now you, wah really going on boy, everybody jumpin on d SLI 680 banwagaon. I like. Much rather compete with individuals than stores, but lets not get into that :)

Firstly, first thing i think when i see that was like, jah that man running 24/7 openbench, that dangerous. But yuh see fairly certain it safe. Juss doh come in d room after washing yuh hands and forget and flick it, lolol.

But still nice to see men trying different stuff. Kinda bored of d same old machine in ah case thing. Nice to see some mods, men going out d box (literally lol), etc.
I going and try something new for my new machine too.

But i kinda holding out to see if evga release a classified version of d 690, so my machine wont hit for ah couple months.

Anyways, nice Scores, Nice Rig, Nice Angle.
Now is to see how far u willing to push it in d name of Benchmarks.

Stop it.  Stop it now.  :laughing7:

...and yeah, the word 'awesome' has a new synonym: Avengers (with the capital A too)

So that rig is superbly 'Avengers'.  :laughing7:

lmao @ avengers with cap A.

And for reall @ flick wet hands. Really watching out for that.

As for OC, I only start last night so im still learning and reading. I'll push it as hard as it will go (eventually) just for benchmarks but really, i'm good with a 4.2ghz oc for 24/7 operation. Currently testing the minimum voltage settings for stable operation at that frequency.
