PC won't detect ide
«
on:

Its a dell 8300
current went and the pc would not start up. Power supply was changed and everything worked fine for a while.
now the pc won't detect ide drives. It seems that the hard drive is underpowered, it won't spin. when the power supply is not conneted to the motherboard, the drive spins up fine. the drive also works in other pc's.
So could it be that the motherboard is bad and affects the powers supply and intern affects the ide drives?
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS?

when you say

don't you mean when the Drive isn't (IDE) connected to the mainboard? cuz the drive gets its power directly from the PSU, and the chances of the 12V rail in the PSU to be shot are kinda minimal as the PC does apparently power up. although i HAVE seen some questionable PSU's not work in certain PC's and work in others! shish, it's electronics for you!

You say you changed the pwr supply.
Was the new power supply rated @ or above the original pwr supply?
If not then the PC is underpowered and that can cause errors
Have you tried changing the IDE cable?
just exchange for any old one yuh have around the place and see if the cable was bad
Testing to make sure is not the IDE on the board that gone?
test with another drive on the same board, can be any IDE device yuh just testing to make sure the IDE on the board working
if yuh have ah p4 pwr connector doh forget it out, some board doh even boot without it.
If all else fails scrap down to the board, chip, ram, v/c, and the hdd and see if it boot. in other words move out everything else but the hdd from the board and test it. Long shot but worth a try.
if your board gone, fadda lord, yuh still have warranty?
I not a fan of Dell but i know them pc's does come with like a yr/3 yrs or sum.

I concur. It seems the board is the problem here. Remember, Dell uses their own pinout for their power supplies and motherboards eh.
Make sure that the power supply you used is a Dell one. If it wasn't, you may have damaged the board when you powered it up.

the ide cable is good. replaced the powere supply with a 500 watts and the p4 connected.
it look like the board to me. Is not my pc and it aint got warraty , is like 3 years old going on 4.
just the board giving problems, sometimes it would come up with a keyboard failure.that is probly a sign that the board was going bad.
the pc was connected to a ups, when current went, the ups came off, so it would seem that the ups has a problem that affected the pc.

It's a dell... it's lasted 3 years... it's pretty much reached EOL... so time to either replace the mobo (with an expensive refurbished replacement from Dell since normal ATX mobos won't fit in a dell case properly) or throw it out and sell off the parts... or rebuild it with mods to the case or new case altogether...
