MICROSOFT SAID a survey it conducted showed that many female IT professionals reckon women are put off pursuing a career in computing by its geeky image..

Of the women surveyed, 50 per cent said they were viewed as "nerdy" by other women because they were in the tech industry.

The long hours culture in the industry also puts them off with late nights and weekend working not exactly an attraction.

After women have had babies, most thought materity leave would damage their careers.

Male geeks also think female geeks are less techy than themselves. The women also feel excluded from social gatherings of the geeks.

There is hope, then. Surely most women would go stark staring bonkers if they socialised down the pub with the geeky boys who talked about nothing but ASP, gadgets and gizmos, while sinking endless pints of real ale and guffawing like drunken idiots. µ

well id have to agree on some of the points here

the women in tech dont act like real techs, not saying they any less technical, but women in tech are still very womenly and not harcore techy, ive never heard any of the women in the tech industry i know ( quite a few actually) at one of the many social gatherings we go to, standing in a circle speaking about techy stuff... it just doenst happen, they have their seperate womanly identities apart from their work... something very.. very.. un techy like.. i mean pfft... life outside the Os and 1s?

I've actually met a serious female techie... now I wouldn't say she's a techie the way men are techie... but she is a consultant for a partner firm and she's been in the industry before their was an industry (read she worked for a *small startup* named Honeywell...lol, yeah she's not young) but she'd be able to tell you ur @$$ from ur transistors in the tech industry. Has no kids, is married and is heavy into networking. Nice person and a real 'techie' imho.. but alas that is an exception and not a rule or even remote common.

Most women don't like the industry because there's no glamour in it, and sometimes its a dirty job.
Can't be a tech with hi-heeled stilleto shoes, fancy make-up and hair, or even SKIRTS for that matter.

Especially where I work (RBL), the ladies see us techs always under tables and counters, and warpped up in dirty
cabling and hardware.  Whenever posts in my dept are advertised, only the men would apply anyway.

theres a girl tech at the new job i work...

she wears alot of pants.... and never goes under desks... and when she wears skirts its for meetings... she goes to alot of those... and the guy techs are never invited...


this one time i  went to head office, and like the guy techs dont have badges so we were walking up an apparently the minister was there so security was all like ahhhhh teh terroristtss ahhhh

and we are like uhh no dude we are IT and they like oh yeahh!! wheres yurr batchess! and iam like thinkin we dont need no steenkin batches!! were IT MENG!!
but they are all like reaching for their guns  ... and we are all like ohhh noooeeezzz

and THENNN she walks by and the guards are all like stupified and in unisom *haiiii vannesssaaa*
and shes all like HAI HAI HAII and oh hi boys
and they let her in!!
and iam like w t f dude!!! shes one of us!!
and they are like pffft yall, with her, neverzzzzz
so then i cried and then our boss comes outside and is like oh yeah yall dont have  batches... oh well let them in... yeah...
