Well its official now, No LAN. When you factor in that Blizzard is also releasing the game and then two expansion packs to play as the other races in single player it makes me wonder how long before they announce they gonna have a subscription fee.

From that article, it suggests that pirates killed Lan feature in SC2.

Interesting. I'll still believe it when I see it. A sc2 without lan play.

(see quote from article below)

Well, it's definitely true. Blizzard has killed LAN support in the upcoming
StarCraft II, and here's the official word from Bob Colayco at Blizzard PR:

"We don't currently plan to support LAN play with StarCraft II, as we are building Battle.net to be the ideal destination for multiplayer gaming with StarCraft II and future Blizzard Entertainment games. While this was a difficult decision for us, we felt that moving away from LAN play and directing players to our upgraded Battle.net service was the best option to ensure a quality multiplayer experience with StarCraft II and safeguard against piracy.

Several Battle.net features like advanced communication options, achievements, stat-tracking, and more, require players to be connected to the service, so we're encouraging everyone to use Battle.net as much as possible to get the most out of StarCraft II. We're looking forward to sharing more details about Battle.net and online functionality for StarCraft II in the near future."

So, let it hereby be noted that pirates killed the LAN parrrrrty.

Ah, the old excuse (and YES I call it an excuse and nothing more!) of piracy...

The sad thing is, I can see fake bnet servers being established to bypass those issues for pirated copies...but it really does suck though, was looking so forward to playing this for LANs, it's relatively impractical to have 10 PCs being connected to bnet, when everyone is basically in the same room, and without an Internet connection.

Demigod proved the severity of the piracy situation. 10 : 1

That was the ratio of pirated copies versus the legit users trying to use the official game servers.

The numbers become painfully real when game server get hit by hacked/cracked copies of a game. Moreso than before, gamers are online and on broadband connections. That exponentially increases the situation.

No one can deny the financial advantage for Blizzard in making such a move to go online only but it is a serious slap in the face of the lan party crowd that made starcraft the success it was. (at least on this island anyway)

If this really turns out to be true, I will be very dissappointed but morseo it will be a major nail in the coffin of sweat as we know it.

Enter the Online Era. The sweat is dead, long live the sweat.

this is a very worrying trend....

If a behemoth like sc can do this... others may believe they should as well.. and we will lose a very integral part of gaming..

So why we can't simply run a Bnet server local, as in, if 10 men wanna sweat some SC, then one person run a "Bnet" app on their pc and the other 9 login to that?

That's where I think it'll end up

Otherwise, is really the end of sweat as we know it...

Unless like they go the STEAM route, a mandatory connection to bnet just to authenticate THEN once authenticated LAN play ftw... at least I see that as a sensible alternative. THat way even a DIAL UP man could sweat, just dial in, authenticate, then onto LAN sweat....

They could also make the netcode open enough to allow people to host a server on a LAN, and LAN players join , as well as those over the internet  . Best of both worlds.

It has now been confirmed, officially delayed till 2010

http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/59856

Quote

In the long battle between Blizzard's standards and the calendar year, the calendar again came out the loser today with the announcement that the studio's anticipated RTS sequel StarCraft II has been delayed into the first half of 2010.

Blizzard attributed the delay to needing additional time to produce the new version of Battle.net, its online gaming service. Though few details are available on the new portal, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick likened it to Xbox Live in its combination of gameplay and social networking features.

"Over the past couple of weeks, it has become clear that it will take longer than expected to prepare the new Battle.net for the launch of the game," said Blizzard in a statement.

Added the company: "The upgraded Battle.net is an integral part of the StarCraft II experience and will be an essential part of all of our games moving forward. This extra development time will be critical to help us realize our vision for the service."

The shift of StarCraft II does not come as a huge surprise, as some analysts were already predicting the sequel might slip into the next year. Blizzard had previously stated the StarCraft II beta could last from four to six months, meaning that even if the beta had begun in August, it would have left a very tight window for Blizzard to work in.

While affirming the game was planned for release by the end of 2009, Blizzard president Mike Morhaime said in May: "But as always, we won't release it until it meets our standards and the expectations of our players."
