Video playback problem with new V/Card
«
on:

I've been having a problem with this new video card that I've gotten for my system. Every time a video file is to be played (using VLC and WMP), the entire system slows down to an absoulute crawl.
Disabling DirectX acceleration seems to fix the problem, and I've tried reinstalling DirectX to see if that could have been an issue, but it doesn't help. Having the DirectX acceleration is really an unacceptable option if this is to be used as a gaming PC....
Any other suggestions that you guys might have to help determine what could be going wrong?

Give more system details....vid card type, what drivers you're using etc. Could possibly be a driver issue.

Could also be a codec issue.
You STILL usin WMP!!? Steupsss....
Use Media Player Classic man. It plays EVERYTHING, and has all the necessary codecs.

When it comes to video - I mainly use VLC, but I tried WMP (old and new versions), as well as MP Classic to verify that it wasn't just an issue with the player itself. I seriously doubt that it's a codec issue considering that when the Graphic Card accleration is reduced, the videos work fine, and that I even tried MPEG-1 files, with no success.
You can hear the sound, but the system slows down to a crawl - it typically takes about 3-5 mins to bring up the Task Manager to force the application to close.
Well, the specs that matter, cuz it didn't have any problems when I was using the older card (Radeon 9550):
Video Card: XFX Geforce 6800XT.
Driver: Latest driver according to Nvidia's website when searching for drivers for the 6000-series cards (November 2006 release date).
I was wondering myself if it was a driver issue, but the driver I have is supposed to be stable. Everything else runs properly, but any application that uses any sort of video playback suffers.

I remember some time ago I was getting some kind of video problem as well when i had my 6800. At the time, I was running an Nforce 2 board and used the latest chipset drivers. The problem turned out to be those latest drivers after much research so I ended up using an old driver...then again you said the system was working fine with the old video card...
You on nforce 2 by any chance?

One question, SPK: did you change your PSU like you said you were going to?
Is just an arbitrary question, but I say cover all likely and unlikely scenarios...

Yea I changed the PS - I have a 600W Omega PS now...
And I'm not on Nforce2...
I think it could be a driver issue...but I just wanted to check it out to make sure, cover all the bases one time.

i had this issue when i first installed my x800xl. (upgrade from agp x800 pro to pcie x800xl new board etc)
what i did was uninstall ALL my codecs, media players etc, reinstalled latest dx9, then latest drivers for vcard, and after reboot, reinstalled all my codecs and media players.
presto worked like a charm.
that was for me and i have an ati, never occurred again since then. if drivers aren't issue then you should try my solution.
have u tried installin any high defintion codecs btw?
also what about your windows updates, are u up to date?

I'd suggest on top of what berzerker says to uninstall all your current drivers and install the latest version of the drivers, especially/at least chipset
