Dell chooses Ubuntu as its desktop linux provider
« on: May 01, 2007, 12:28:25 PM »

Computer maker Dell has chosen Ubuntu as the operating system for its range of Linux computers for consumers.

Fans of Linux hope that the move will persuade more mainstream PC users to abandon Microsoft Windows and opt for the open-source operating system.

London-based firm Canonical, the lead sponsor of the Ubuntu project, will ensure the software works on Dell PCs.

Ubuntu includes software like office programs, e-mail, a browser, instant messaging software and a media player.

Michael Dell, the founder, chairman and chief executive of Dell, is himself an Ubuntu user. He has the operating system installed on a high-end Dell Precision M90 laptop he uses at home.

Dude, I'm totally getting a Dell. I'm in the market for a new laptop and it's nice to finally get a pre-loaded linux machine that's not underpowered or expensive.

We'll I've downloaded and been using ubuntu on a system for the past week or so (familiarizing mehself with linux nah) and so far its been a mixed bag. Ubuntu by far is a easiest version i've used to date. The install cd is a live cd which will install using the full gui so no command line required (not yet anys) and it installs relatively fast (even on old PIII hardware). I've never dabled too much with linux at least in desktop form and most experiences have been most frustrating. Even now, though Ubuntu I think does REALLY well to emulate a windows type experience... it just ain't quite ready for mainstream... even Dell mentions that I believe.

That aside, so far its been a decent test run. Ubuntu has a million repositories and apps to install with a nice add/remove programs option, also has an automated updates and it comes with open office and a decent set of apps for everyday office use. Since my requirements of Linux are a bit more than office work... well MS Office type workloads, i've spent alot of time downloading and reading up on various apps and pretty much (at least atm) trying to bring Ubuntu up to mark in terms of apps to match my windows machines (no games obviously). My greatest irk with linux is there isn't (at least so far as i've seen) a unified installation process. Every app I download has its own separate installation instructions or instructions to compile the app since alot of apps I have tried are native to red hat or fedora etc. Even so I want to compile from source to get the hang of things. Problem with that is finding all the damn libraries and repositories with the correct files needed to compile and that takes time to download depending. In the office with 2Mb speeds it no scene, at home... on TSTT dsl... *sighs*... you get the idea. I think Ubuntu so far is a nice intro to Linux and those wishing to investigate Linux, here is a good place to start. Also their forum is pretty good with solving problems. There are a million different topics with answers to MANY questions/problems you run into when using/installing/etc.

I downloaded 4 versions of 6.06 (Dapper Drake) because it had the longest support (till 2009 I believe) whereas ver 7.0 has till 2008. That aside I have the 32-bit desktop and server + the 64-bit server and desktop. I've installed the latest fedora now as well... its KDE by default as opposed to GNOME like on Ubuntu.. and honestly i'm a lil intimidated by it as its much more cluttered than ubuntu, its also a lil slow on the dls of repositories, but since I now start using it i'll see how it goes...

Even now, though Ubuntu I think does REALLY well to emulate a windows type experience... it just ain't quite ready for mainstream... even Dell mentions that I believe.

I don't think it's trying to emulate a Windows experience. The mere fact that there is a unified packaging system like rpm and deb+apt-get indicates that. It has many advantages and disadvantages over the free for all installation in Windows. Linux also has a culture of storing all configuration in text files, as it makes it easy to edit and script, something that's not the case in Windows.

It depends on which 'mainstream' you're talking about too. It's clearly ready for the 'Grandma', which is most people, who just need to get a small set of relatively simple things done, like websurfing and typing documents. It's obviously ready for the power user who isn't afraid of googling forums, checking irc, using the cli and editing files. It's that group in the middle that aren't comfortable with it. The power user who loves installing windows power tools to accomplish tasks, the power user who has some annoying vertical app, the power user who is afraid of the cli. That's the group in the middle that Linux needs to tackle.

Part of that is education. Just like with Windows and Mac when someone first learned it, there was a learning curve and Linux is no different. If it's made easy to learn the norms in a linux desktop, it would make a users adoption easier. Many of the group in the middle would realise that they're cli people if they just spent some time with it to try it out.

Ubuntu is making it easier for people to do that, partly through obviously-needed gui frontends for basic tasks like installation. There needs to be more of that.

Dell says Linux is not for business

 SMEs must buy Windows
By Nick Farrell: Thursday 21 June 2007, 08:17

WHILE DELL MAY have made some moves towards Ubuntu Linux, it is refusing to allow its business customers to buy it.
According to one poster on an Ubuntu forum, Dell refused to sell him an Ubuntu machine for his small, non-profit business.
Cosborn72 said he wanted to support Dell in its decision to sell computers with Ubuntu installed and tried to order one.
The small business representative told him that he could not order one of the Ubuntu-based computers through the small business department. Instead cosborn72 had to go through the "home and home office" department.
The Home office department told him that Dell had a policy which was remarkably like Holland's drugs' laws, in other words "personal use only".
Cosborn72 lied and said he would use the machine for his home and then tried to use a business credit card to pay for it and was told he couldn't. Since he could not buy the Dell without paying tax he didn't bother.
"I am just blown away that they would refuse my money because I was buying it to use for a business," he moaned.
Cosborn72 also questioned any outfit that goes around telling its customers how they can use their products, although the Music and Movie industry has been doing this for ages. He did not think that Dell was really interested in supporting Ubuntu and Linux.
Maybe someone should point out to Michael Dell that if he really wants his company out of its current financial doodah, and perhaps beat HP, he should allow his staff to flog some gear. Michael does not make much money if the computer is sitting in the warehouse. µ

hmmm

well think about it, wouldnt it kinda be liek infringement of the open use act thingy what ever its called that governs the whole linux is free jazz nonsenseness??

What ever, i really came in this thread to ask whinny and you larry.. ummm was the point?

you have windows machines right?
why are yu investing time in something that does nothing that windows cant, but cant do everythign that windows does?

Iam not trying to be a "fan boy" as yu people like to label me.
Iam asking because i dabbled in dsl for a while, i thought it was cool to have the ability to boot an os from a flash key and then load it into ram.

And after that bit of coolness wore off i was left with a big giant feeling of... so what?
there was nothing i could really do with it, and nothing i couldnt do with windows and vm ware.

*sigh* i mean, can someone reccomend a linux distro thingy to me that will give me some sort of experience beyond installing an os and thats it?

My main purpose for learning linux is job related. There are alot of networking tools that are free and built into linux that would be very useful for network trouble shooting. Then there is the viruses... or lack thereof. You go to a customer network known to be infected with windows viruses, it pays to have an OS that will not be affected whilst your doing your job and lastly, cause its a free very stable tried and true platform for a webserver which I also want to set up for the office for internal use. Hope that answers your questions.

Well, I was dabbling in it for awhile but only got into it after I got hit with spyware even though I had the trifecta, anti-virus, firewall, and anti-spyware running and up to date. From there I stayed for the free software concept, the fact that it uses less resources (not much less but whatever), and because it was free as in beer (me == broke) I was getting into it more because the skills are needed for a job. I know I'd be having a much harder time at my current job if I didn't have cli familiarity since a lot of businesses use linux and solaris.

And Windows Activation really pisses me off.

The major killer app for the linux desktop right now though is Compiz. Just do a search for Compiz Fusion in youtube. It already surpasses macosx leopard's ui updates right now. Aside from that and most of the gaming, everything else I need works in ubuntu.

Ahm.

Ubuntu is pretty nice, though not my choice.  I actually prefer SimplyMepis, since spending all day configuring Windows machines is not my idea of fun.

Dell puts Ubuntu on Euro computers

UK. France, and Germany

By Nick Farrell: Wednesday 08 August 2007, 07:16
DELL HAS announced that punters in the United Kingdom, France and Germany can order an Inspiron E1505N 6400 notebook or an Inspiron 530N desktop with Ubuntu 7.04 pre-installed.

Dell's US customers have been installing Ubuntu in the United States since May, and a spokesDell said that there had been many requests from customers all over the world to offer Linux in their home countries.

Under the scheme, Dell will configure and install open source drivers for hardware, when possible for these new products.

There are no prices announced yet, but normally the laptops work out about $50 cheaper than Dell's Home Versions.

It seems that Dell is also offering SuSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 factory-installed on select consumer notebooks and desktops in China.
