Help! :D umm with Networking =x
« on: May 02, 2007, 05:40:21 PM »
Well i have gotton my ps3 now and it is pwnage online but the problem is i only have 1 dsl modem (256k paradine tstt) when i have them both connected to the modem my pc's internet stops moving completely and the ps3 takes all the speed so i usually have one connected at a time.

I want to be able to continuously download naruto while playing resistance online and killing thoughtlessly, but i cant so i call tstt to ask how much a second modem would cost and they dont want to sell me a second one they say some sort of crap or the other. So, someone tells me the best thing to do is get a router and run the lines so that i can use both pc and ps3 online at once.

How does it work? What is a good cheap router as im broke and i cant afford one to expensive? And Will this split the 256k speed or will both my pc and ps3 be running at 256k? Please no comments on how little knowledge i have with hardware thats why i come to u guys :P.

well if you looking at the cheap, get a switch and hook the modem up to it then hook both devices to the switch
Also if you plan to share the connection expect some chopping.
If you MUST download Naruto simultaneously, get a good download manager that can adjust the download speed, free download manager does this with it's light medium and heavy settings, so at least it will be downloading albeit not as fast. on light you prob get a max of 7-10 KB

this way at least you wont chop so bad...:P

at 256k... I in no way recommend downloading while gaming online...I have 800k and still don't do it...
Even the PS3 shuts you out from leaving files to download while playing online..

But if you must attempt it.. you can get a good router for around 300 dollars or so...
A wireless for about 5-600...

I have a wireless router and it works pretty fine with the ps3...

But I does run a direct line from my modem to it anywayz...
If you gaming online I suggest giving ur ps3 the priority...

The download manager as WASD said is a good option..
But again you just opening up yourself to more lag...

ok if i have to in anyway split the connection im not doing it because besides the fact that i download alot i play  MMORPGS on pc and if im on an MMO i want my bro to be able to be online n ps3 at same time and splitting 256k is really out of the question id need some way to get both to run at 256k and if i cant ill have to stick with switching which would suck.

It's impossible for both of them to have 256K simultaneously on the same 256K line...if both are on at the same time, they will fight with each other for bandwitdh, and with only 256K, they're both gonna be losers since you simply don't have enough bandwidth to go around.

DSL doesn't work that way.  Simply 'getting another modem' will not work, unless you have another DSL-enabled phone-line.

You can use a switch as WASD suggested to have all devices online at the same time,
but with 256K bandwidth, its pointless to try playing games online AND downloading.
You're just wasting time.

Its either one or the other.  Not both.

i think they mean 4 lines from a router or so...

If you really want to get 2 256k connections simultaneously..you have to pay the price of a next 256k

Blood how young are you just outta curiousity? REAL plenty ppl have alot of culture shock coming when they realize how EXPENSIVE LIVING is... you'll appreciate your parents more soon my young friend... LOL. Hear's what, those 4 lines are PHONE LINES as in you can have 4 PHONES in your house on whatever your house phone number is and have no problems. What they effectively mean is after 4 lines are split off the original, any further splitting could result in signal degredation (or so they want you to believe). As for someones comment on another DSL capable line. Basically that means you NEED ANOTHER PHONE NUMBER aka ANOTHER PHYSICAL LINE TO YOUR HOUSE from the light pole outside.

To be honest, aDSL can support much higher speeds, its just residental lines are capped at 256k to the more fortunate 512k... ATM unless you can convince TSTT to up your bandwidth (AT A PRICE NO DUH) you're pretty much stuck with switchin between the two. As a side note I suggest you get a switch NOT A ROUTER (SOOOOOOOO MANY PPL have this strange idea in their heads that they need a ROUTER, especially wireless routers...) all you need is a Wireless ACCESS POINT in most cases. That aside, in the least with a simple 100tt switch you could connect more than 1 PC and prolly browse or something simple on the PS3 while your bro playing his MMORPG.

Another side note, what MMORPG is he playing? I play on Xbox Live whilst my bros play WOW.... damn @ PS3 sucking all the bandwidth, but I understand that... why it would SUCK MORE bandwidth if its available when its running on 256k is beyond me however...

In short Blood, relax (yuh ranting about things a bit much) and welcome to the REAL world or expense expense and bad service...

wow, lol
not bagging on yu or anything eh blood lol buh it was almost painfull to read the questions yu asked about splitting the 256k lol

*sigh*

ummo, cheap switch, one of the next 8 port switches would be yur best option
no need to switch just plug both in, just use only one at a time
download with a download manager or using torrents and throttle the downloads down if yu wanna browse on yur ps3 an download buh fuh real it have no point in tryin to game online and download same time, i dont even do it on my connection.

best thing is to download while yu sleep an not home
and game when yu home

think most people use that solution
