Prince of Persia: The Movie
« on: April 18, 2007, 12:16:24 AM »
Prince of Persia movie director announced

The project, headed by a collaboration between Jerry Bruckheimer Productions and Walt Disney Pictures, has recently hired Michael Bay to direct the film, who has worked with Bruckheimer on such films as Armageddon, The Rock, and the Bad Boys series. It is reported that Bay will begin working on the film as soon as Transformers, his current summer blockbuster project, is completed.

Concept art for the film

Titled Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, the movie will be based on the 2003 game that brought the Prince of Persia series back from the dead. However, Jordan Mechner, the series' creator, has stated that the transformation from game to film will not be exact.

"Rather than do a straight beat-for-beat adaptation of the new videogame, we're taking some cool elements from the game and using them to craft a new story -- much as 'Pirates' [of the Caribbean] did with the theme park ride," Mechner said in an interview.

Although it had been originally announced with a hopeful 2008 release date, Prince of Persia fans may have to wait a year longer. Bruckheimer has since announced that the project has been slated for a release of Summer 2009.

This could be great but I done gettin pissed at them changing the story.

It was perfect as is.

Little wary of Walt Disney as POP heads in a violent and bloody direction. Taming it for a general audience could take off the edge that added so much to the atmosphere.

Death was a very real threat at almost every turn. Without the sands, sweat buss so many times it not funny.

oh well, fingers and toes crossed.

Actually the first POP (back from the dead that is) wasn't that violent... meaning you were killing sure... but alot of undead chars and a few guards... we can live with that. FOr the most part it was puzzle solving to the max and it was nowhere near as dark as the 2nd and 3rd isntallments. I think changing the story a bit is good in that we will not know EVERYTHING that has to happen in the movie. Have some faith as they did marvels with the Pirates of the Caribbean so why not this?

yeah but if they start off with a non violent movie I doubt they'd progress to the pace of the 2nd and 3rd.

but good point re: pirates of the caribbean.

Great flicks, just that it isn't anywhere near as sombre as the story line of the Prince.

Since we are dealing with undead characters I think it will be a mix very similar to that of "Pirates" yes there will be killing but they would probably focus more on the adventure aspect of the game. More specifically the high flying rooftop acrobatics and wall running. Think something along the lines of Indiana Jones but with The Matrix time controls. Since the same writers for the game are doing the story for the movie I have a lot of faith in what they can accomplish.

Shots in stereo. The AIDS man cometh!

Well now we've seen Transformers and Michael Bay scores major points for his work there...

Do you think you're a little more open minded about this movie?

prince of persia series was story driven, i don't know if i'd trust michael bay to do that even if it is a reimagining of the story, he did ok with transformers though.

I think Michael Bay does a great job at re-imagining epic action driven movies. Howerver if POP is to be story driven ( but if its being compaired to pirates, then i douth it will) i'am not that confident in him.

I would think Bay would come up with something good. The problem with critics is that (appart from them being f#cking stupid and have no degree wrt to what they are critiquing) is that they judge each aspect of a movie or game purely on that aspect with no adherance to the reason as to why its used.
In other words the focus would be story, or action or whatever depending on the genre. You cant have all.....you make one the focus and work on that. its the BASIC concept for any multimedia application. You make one thing above the bar and everything else on par or at a high enough level. Problem is there is no "rulebook" to judge peoples opinons or ideas as to how "good" something is appart from their taste....its left to dumb f*ck critics to decide on if its good or not (god i hate them).

Some additional news regarding the movie:

Quote
Gyllenhaal ascends Prince of Persia throne

Jerry Bruckheimer's feature film adaptation of Ubisoft's Prince of Persia series finally has a leading man.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the role of the titular prince will be played by Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain, The Day After Tomorrow). The film industry trade paper is also reporting that starring opposite Gyllenhaal in the leading lady role will be up-and-coming new Bond girl, Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace, RocknRolla).

The film is being directed by Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Pushing Tin), with a script by Doug Miro and Carlo Bernard (who teamed together for the screenplay of The Great Raid), Boaz Yakin (Fresh, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights), and Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner.

The Hollywood Reporter also has some news of the film's plot. Gyllenhaal will play the princely Dastan as he strives to prevent a nefarious nobleman from obtaining the continuum-controlling Sands of Time. Arterton's character, the princess Tamina, will join him on his quest.

Production on the film is now set to begin in July.

Also, I found this cool looking screen so I thought I would share:
