Ladies and gents, I present to you, the budget 8 series cards...

PNY GeForce 8600 GTS Hands-On Preview - Features at GameSpot

Quote
The GeForce 8600 GTS and the GeForce 8600 GT wowed and disappointed us at the same time. Performance in shader intensive games like Oblivion was impressive; however neither of the cards offers performance gains over what you can already purchase in the sub-$200 category. More often than not, the 8600s lag behind the GeForce 7900 GS, the Radeon X1950 Pro, and especially the Radeon X1900 XT. The allure of DirectX 10 support might count for something, but we're not prepared to give Nvidia credit until we see how these cards actually perform with DirectX 10 games. For the moment, we'd pass on the GeForce 8600 GTS and the GeForce 8600 GT in favor of similarly priced higher-performance DirectX 9 cards. If you’re willing to spend a little more, the GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB provides vastly superior performance.

Well, you do get what you pay for, but still, I expected performance numbers at LEAST in the 7900 GT range
for all of them.

yeah, that is poor.

I'll have to pony up to 8800 GTS 320mb at this rate.

ATI trump has yet to hit the table, so when it does, maybe things will shake up a bit.

Especially if they achieve the price points they are aiming for.

Not too bad... still waiting to see if it's worth getting one of these or settling for the 7900GS

In particular, this one

Actually, Anandtech's benchmarking tests put the 8600 GTS on par with the 7900 GS in some tests, and with the X1950 PRO in others.  Overall, the performance is substantially above that of the 7900 GS for about the same price, so yeah, the 8600 GTS is the slightly better value here.

However, for less than $100 US more, the 8800 GTS delivers so much more performance, I think its actually worth it to stretch
them dollars just a wee bit more for that one instead.

I agree with you arc.

Wash some cars if you have too and get the 8800 GTS. I wish they made more of a performance leap in the middle tier cards though.

But on second thought, since I running a 7900 GT, I'm out of the middle league already.

I really should be watchin the high end parts like 8800 GTS.

Be lay that order #1. Warp speed ahead.

I very much doubt that nvidia will drastically drop prices on their cards when DAAMiT drop their cards...at least I don't expect the price to drop more than a few bucks anyway.

ACtually I read a review of the 8600GTS in SLI... it gets LEVEL CUT ARSE from the 8800GTS (far less for the GTX). It's not worth it, so try again trini. Long GONE are the days of 6600GT in SLI beating out the 6800GT

MY x1800xt and a 7900 level card should hold out the year, Crysis's /Unreal 3 's recommended hardware are these supposedly , and i don't want to waste money on a card that doesn't at least double my performance... I'll wait till the Geforce 9 series or so for a 9800 GTS around 250 ish.

Apparently the XFX 8600 GTS XXX is rather 'bess'.

Check dat s#!t.

Amazon price kinda hot though.

No denying it though.  For the price, the performance is rather good.  I think I want one (for 'testing' of course.  :happy0203:)

Last I read the 8600GTS is on par and slightly better than the top of the line DX9 parts eg. 7950GT and X1950XT. But it boasts DX10 as well, so all things considered, this card should be quite a nice mid-range performer with best performance in DX9 but still able to play DX10 titles with some 'reduced' settings. Personally I look at 8800GTS 640MB or R6xx variant... or maybe when its on 65nm process. But seriously the 8800GTS looking like the sweet spot.
