what is the mathematical significance of the above?

ANSWER:

The words and the colors of the words are meant to distract you from the real reason the words are there, they are representatives of numbers...
red(3), blue(4), green(5), orange(6), hence; 3,4,5,6. (which sync and cross got, sync got it very quickly though and he didnt want to spoil it too soon, so he gave the rest a chance)

Its an A.P.(Arithmetic progression)

a_n=a₁+(n-1)d

where a is the intial term (3), and d the common difference (1,determined by the difference of any two successive terms in the progression)

therefore to get the 3rd term (green/5)

a₃=3+(3-1)*1
a₃=3+2
a₃=green...er...5!

  The town traffic engineer needs to count cars on Central Avenue. Central Avenue is open to cars with 4 wheels. Motorcycles, trucks, and all other vehicles are prohibited. She set up two counters. One stretches across both lanes and counts cars going in both directions. The other goes across only one lane and counts cars traveling east.

Each counter increases by one when a pair of wheels runs over it. Therefore, 2 counts equals 1 car. At the end of one 24-hour period, the double counter reads 688. The single counter reads 320.

How many cars traveled east on Central Avenue, and how many traveled west?
