What if SONY threw a party....
« on: March 26, 2007, 06:57:24 AM »
....and nobody shows up?

http://kotaku.com/gaming/ps3-launch/australian-ps3-launch-shindig-246437.php

Man....this is just depressing.

An 80-person turnout may not seem like an abysmal number, but when you compare it to the launches of the Wii (which is still in insane demand) and the X-Box360, as well as consider the fact that there were very little actual customers among the crowd, it's still pretty much a flop.

Can't blame SONY for trying, though.
But, as sorry as I do feel for them, there's still just no way I am shelling out so much money on a gaming console. Not even if Tekken 6 was coming out for it eventually.

PlayStation 3 exceeds 20,000 sales in Australia

According to The Age's screenplay blog over 20,000 PlayStation 3's were sold from Friday the 23rd of March through to yesterday.

The combined sales of hardware, peripherals and software generated in excess of $25 million of retail spending, according to Sony Computer Entertainment Australia. It's worth stating that these are not official figures though and come directly from Sony.

Official GfK figures will be published very shortly and we'll report on them once they become available. 20,000 units is more than we had expected the console to sell based on launch reports.

Well, would you look at that.

Still, that price tag (and the fact that there are currently no interesting titles to reel me in, as such) has me very wary about buying it right now.

PS3 kicks off most successful home console launch in Europe... ever
« Reply #5 on: March 26, 2007, 04:25:48 PM »
MCV confirms the news that will send many a fanboy into a sequence of uncontrollable convulsions: The Playstation 3 has officially become the fastest-selling home console in Europe over its launch weekend. A reported 165,000 PS3 units were snatched from shelves, besting the Wii's 105,000 launch units and the Xbox 360's 70,000. The PSP still holds the top speed record (185,000 units) as a handheld, but we doubt that's the sort of caveat that will bother the folks at Sony.

With plenty of consoles left in the 220,000 strong initial shipment, it would appear that a strong supply is the key to launch victory. Will sales remain brisk in the foreseeable future? We'll find out soon enough, but until then, expect some elaborately spun responses from Sony's competitors. Perhaps UK journalists ought to return those stacks of beer to Microsoft -- then again, alcohol already seems a likely explanation for steering the Xboat to the wrong continent.

It's not really that.....whenever a console comes out, it usually takes a truly new, kickass title to reel me in. A new Mortal Kombat or Mega Man game usually is the clincher for me, but it could be something else entirely. Right now, there isn't any incentive for me to get one.

....besides which, I have Tekken: DR on my PSP already, so I'm good.

PS3 dominates Australian software charts in spite of ho-hum launch

Update on Aussie Launch

PS3 dominates Australian software charts in spite of ho-hum launch

Initial reports from Australia pointed to a less-than-enthusiastic response from Australian gamers during last month's PlayStation 3 launch, with numerous news sources estimating approximately 20,000 units sold on opening weekend. Sony Computer Entertainment Australia has issued a recent press release clarifying that, according to figures released by marketing firm GfK, 27,083 consoles were sold during the 10-day period following the system's March 23rd launch, earning Sony a total of AU $33 million (US $27 million) in hardware sales.

According to figures provided by the Sydney Morning Herald, Microsoft sold 36,627 Xbox 360 units while Nintendo sold 41,369 Wii consoles through the 11 days following their respective launches. The extra day in the statistics is due to the fact that both of these consoles launched on a Thursday, as opposed to Sony initiating sales of their systems on a Friday.

However, despite having engineered only a third place launch in the next-gen console war, GfK also reports that Sony still managed to sweep the Australian software sales charts for the week started March 19th, 2007. According to their data, 9 of the top 10 titles are PS3 games, with Sony's Resistance: Fall of Man, MotorStorm, and Formula One Championship Edition grabbing the top three spots on the list. The only non-PS3 game on the list was Final Fantasy XII, which is an exclusive for the PS2.

In fact, the PS2 still seems to have a life of its own in Aus, selling 7,954 units during the two week period started March 19th.

Oh, hello, camrE. I was beginning to think you were dead, or something.

...wait a second. Isn't your name just Ermac backwards? And a Scorpion sig...?

Man, if you're going to knack somebody's tastes, at least don't pwn yourself in the process.
