Godzilla is a Wii monsterGDC 007 Fun with a WiimoteBy Charlie Demerjian in San Francisco: Monday 12 March 2007, 11:02ONE OF THE THINGS that most people don't realize about GDC is that it is not a show about games, it is a show about making games, so there are actually very few games on display. Most of the things there are engine demos or technical eye candy, but there was one I saw worth lusting over, Godzilla for the Wii.Does the thought of flailing around with a Wiimote, crushing buildings and smashing the bad guys sound appealing? How about stomping Mothra and MechaGodzilla with a twist of the wrist? I can see myself having a lot of fun looking like an idiot with this game.Godzilla for the WiiThe game is done by Pipeworks for Foundation 9, and will eventually be sold by Atari. It may look rough, but give it time, it is in a pre-alpha state so I am just happy I got a chance to see it. Eventually there will be 16 characters, two are entirely new for the game, and will be folded back into the official Godzilla universe. There are also eight maps and a story line to explore, but this is a fighting game at the core. You take Godzilla and beat things up. You have fire breath, laser breath, context dependent moves and attacks, and in general, a lot to do.Buildings are destructible in pieces, not just a single crush when hit. You can tag team an apartment building with a friend, or simply throw it at your enemy. Some characters can even fly, and attack while in the air. A lot of the radioactive lizardy goodness of the original is here. There is a lot to do with this game, so don't expect it really soon, more toward the end of the year. For me, the thought of playing a giant lizard breaking things is more than enough to buy the game. I can't wait to see how this turns out. µ
