Seems like a good choice price and performance wise at the moment...as long as you can live without DX10 support. I think you should probably wait until Nvidia releases their midrange 8 series cards (read 8600 ultra etc.) Those parts are supposed to be coming out soon, like in a month or two, which is not a long time. Think about it...you'll get a DX10 part which just might be a higher performer than the 7900gs at just around the same price, if not a little higher. My advice...hold out a little bit.

i agree with unknown, i remember reading an article somewhere where the suggested retail price of a 8600 ultra was about 170-200 (200 for the name bands more than likely), so you can get real benifits from waiting, and if you decide not to buy those then at least these card (7 series) will more than likely get cheaper, so yuh really have nothing to lose from waiting, you either get a beast for the same price or the same card you looking at for cheaper, and by the looks of it is getting cheaper, that is how much i pay for my 7600GT T_T

EDIT:

if you plan to get that card though make sure you PS has either 2 free molex or a PCI-e power connector

Get dat s#!t son.

The 7900 GS is a proven beast (check the official benchmark thread).  You will not be disappointed with the purchase.
It will handle everything you throw at it with medium to high settings, without breaking the bank.

When I got mine a few months ago, it was $212 US, so this is a good deal.

No one is disputing how powerful the card is...its just that common sense tells me that it makes no sense buying a dx9 part now when uber cheap and more powerful dx10 parts are around the corner. Imagine how yuh go feel when a month down the road u see 8600 ultra come out at this same price and 7900gs drop to like $120...not withstanding by the time u wait a while you'l have enough time to make up some more money to get something even better...but whatever floats ur boat dude.

that's the problem... by the time one buys something brand new... it's already 6 hours old and they have a 'newer, BETTER' one on the way! ...i could only imagine how frustrating it IS being a fanatic wanting the latest/greatest/BESTEST parts out there

As far as i hear DirectX aint all its cut out to be and it doesnt improve very much, besides i not planning on getting vista so thats no scene if i cant run direct X.

well blood war you say that you wont be running vista right now but u may want to soon enuff, especially since alot of games are gonna be dx10 exclusives :( so thats gonna be a bummer

plus as he is saying, wait till the 8600 comes out and watch the 7900 gs drop down a further 30 dollars, since yu on a tight budget.

well i dunno alot of the games i playing now dont run on vista and given that a few of them use my nintendo wifi connection i think id be willing to sacrifice a few exclusives. ( nintendo wifi is not vista capable )

Besides my main interest is mmorpgs and given that they want it to be massivly multiplayer they wont make vista exclusives as most people dont have vista atm . you know the mmorpgs ive played are still windows 98 capable so i dont think vista would matter to them.

my 7900 started doing some artifact rubbish a few weeks ago.

Still hoping I was "dreaming" at the time.

Card isn't two years old.

SUPREME COMMANDER LOOKS BOSS!!

yeah, I'd like a DX10 card please sir, thanks.

as for the 7900, I'm not quite sure.

Seen it before and usually spells the end of the cards life. First artifacts, then stops working period.

Artifacts look like graphical glitches on the screens. Dots, messed up 3d rendering, things like that.

If it get's really bad, I will try sending the card back to the states for RMA.

That could take months. Wish me luck.
