Press Release: March 7th 2007

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) today announced the unveiling of a first-of-its-kind 3D online user community service for the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system.  The service, known as “Home,” will enable users to create their own avatar and explore a real-time virtual community, as if they are playing a detailed 3D game for PS3.   The service will become available globally beginning in fall 2007.

Home will be demonstrated at the Game Developer’s Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, California on March 7 as a key element of SCEI Worldwide Studios’ President Phil Harrison’s keynote presentation titled “Game 3.0: Developing and Creating for the 3rd Age of Videogames.”

Home is a real-time online 3D, networked community available on the PLAYSTATION®Network.  It allows PS3 users to interact, communicate, join online games, shop, share private content and even build and show off their own personal spaces to others in real time.  Home will be available as a free download from the PLAYSTATION®Store and will launch directly from XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) on PS3.

With an avatar uniquely customized according to each user’s preference, users can explore the 3D community that is Home – a sleek, modern environment featuring spacious common areas; custom spaces dedicated to specific games; and personal apartments.  Each user is assigned an apartment in Home where they can invite others to join them as they show off their own style in an area they can personalize themselves with furniture, art and other items – even a different view from their windows.  They can also show their personal video, pictures and other digital media content found on their PS3 hard drives in their apartments.  Very rich interactive communication with others is achieved through built in text, audio and video chat, along with sophisticated emotional animations for each character.

Sharing continues in the “Hall of Fame,” where users can display new 3D trophies that will be unlocked through in-game achievements, as well as real time score rankings in PS3 games.

“This is a significant step forward in the area of user community services and emergent entertainment experiences,” said Izumi Kawanishi, Corporate Executive and CTO Software, SCEI.   “While the 3D graphics demonstrate the power of PS3 and the PLAYSTATION Network, the most impressive feature in Home is the variety of ways in which multiple consumers, as well as our third-party partners, can experience the next generation of communication by interacting and sharing among each other.  I feel strongly that this unique blend of community, user-generated content, collaboration and commerce will expand the future of computer entertainment.”

Home will go into a closed beta test this spring with a full launch targeted for later this year.  By having a broad range of business partners participate in Home, along with an expansive catalog of upcoming game software titles for PS3, SCEI will continue to enhance the new world of entertainment and vigorously promote PS3 as the next generation computer entertainment platform.

So I guess all you PS3 owners can create fake versions of yourselves and hang out in your fake apartments and chat about all the games you wish you were playing........

A truly great idea, which should have been available from jump.  Right now, PS3 owners want GAMES, Sony!!! GAMES!!!
Still, very ambitious plan though.

And what ideas has X-box 360 came up with its basically an upgraded version of the X-box nothing that is anywhere near original.

The only truly original system is the Wii which i would like to have but being that my 2 fave games are metal gear and final fantasy ( original series not crystal chronicles shiz ) and many other ps3 games im gonna buy a ps3 but, if you arent addicted to any ps3 titles like me you better off with wii.

In defense of the 360, Microsoft came up with achievements. It seems like that is another idea that Sony "borrowed".

"And what ideas has X-box 360 came up with its basically an upgraded version of the X-box nothing that is anywhere near original."

The difference between The Xbox division of Microsoft and SCE is that Microsoft never -claimed- that any of it's ideas were "new", "original" or "innovative" when in reality they were all frickin' stolen. Hell... even PS3's online is a blantant rip off of freaking Xbox live! What is your point? Honestly?

where have you seen this before this is far more original than anything xbox came up with and just because you dont like ps3 doesnt mean you should rant about everything they do. I admit its not the first of its kind but it is original to put it on a console like this and x-box is a good console it just hasnt done anything worth talking about.

If all you think is that sony shouldnt call the thing " new " and original then you wouldnt be ranting at it like this, this sounds more like a personal vendetta against the ps3.

I admit im not a fan of xbox but i still think its a worthy console. If you dont like ps3 fine but dont just go in every thread ranting about how bad and unoriginal it is. if you want originality go with the wii, x-box is the least original of the 3 its just a plain console thats been upgraded.

As you can see...no, it's not "far more" original than anything the 360 came with. Only incrementally so. Because it's, at it's core, a completely plagiarised idea. Whether or not it's on a console or the PC is irrelevant. You have an amazingly liberal idea of the concept of "originality" and I still have yet to even IMPLY that the Xbox360 has actually done anything original. All it's done is upgrade on it's already functional model and that -works-. And with hardware that is amazingly similar to it's overpriced competition, so much so the the differences are negligible, this isn't even a bad thing.

Of course I have a personal vendetta against the PS3. The PS3 killed my master and made me sterile and now I'm out for revenge. Aside from that, I don't like overpriced hardware and unoriginal ideas made for the sole purpose of pushing a new media format. To be honest...that sounds more like something Microsoft would do. Some people consider the wiimote a gimmick; therfore what would this be? It doesn't improve or even really add to your gamimg experience and this is yet another example of SCE's business model for the PS3 being an attempt to be this entertainment swiss army knife when its missing the point of it's entire existence. It's ultimately not much different than the damned 360, no matter what they throw in.

Again...you keep on saying that like I've ever even implied that the 360 is original!? Hell...I wasn't even a fan of the original xbox because of a lack of games that appealed to me and the best system of the last gen was undeniably the PS2. However, the 360 has stayed with the traditional idea of a console and is doing a damned good job at it by doing what it should do i.e. focusing on games for gamers (which SCE has forgotten how to do it it's horrible attempt at monopolising the home media and entertainment centre...I mean...with such ludicrous quotes like "You won't need a computer anymore" when refering to the PS3. Psht. Please.) and having hardware that isn't a hernia to devlop for. I don't just want the PS3 to be original...I want SCE to also stop attempting to dump trash on us, in the guise of innovation (which none of this is), for the purpose of making an easy dollar.

Besides...why should I not go on in every thread stating my opinion on the topic at hand? This is what internet forums are for. The fact remains that SCE has been stealing ideas from the get go. If they were stealing ideas -and- focused on the gamers I'd be moderately fine with that. When SCE does something -good- for the PS3 I'll also say something. Co-incidentally I don't even think I've ever even praised the 360 on this or any forum. I at most, acknowledge that it's sticking to a formula that works, for us, the gamers.

ok if you consider that a completely plagerized idea then might as well rant at all consoles for stealing the idea of the first console aka The brown box. I consider it an upgrade not an new or plageriized idea if thats plagerized then xbox internet is plagerized because although its internet was much better than ps2, ps2 had it first even dreamcast had it.

I do understand the fact that you think ps3 is overpriced and not worth it but do you have to go and rant about it every chance you get to ruin it for the people who do.

Bloodwar, lets go chat with the girls.
and we just walk up to them and chat.. and if we get rejected..they walk away :(

And stuff like that...
So what if Sony copied Second Life.. (THEY MADE IT BETTER!!!)
What if sony copied the achievements thing that Xbox did first...???

The fact is..they brought the most high-end 3D environment to the gaming world that facilitates everything we care about!
They have merged second life, xbox live, and Wii's Mii into 1 and touched it up with some NEXT-GEN Graphics...

How is that not great?

Which is why you dont run out and buy the shiniest new console on the market.

Sensible gamers should wait at least 8-12 months before diving in headfirst.  So you'll be sure
to have a great library, and by then all the console's bugs would have been worked out.

Early adopters will always get stress, and you're right, the PS3 is young, so stop trying to compare it
to the Xbox 360 until all the cards are on the table.

For Sony to compete properly, (and to get me to buy it, lol) they need more games, and the PS3 price needs to come down.

FULL STOP!!!

Trying to woo gamers with something that should have been available from launch, and not more games
is a bad strategy, and it may bite em square in the ass.

wth?

I trying to understand your concept of not buying something when it comes out...
thise like a rel dotish statement...

What??? so you trying to justify that I shouldn't buy a ps3 when it comes out becuz it don't have enough games?
It have 40 something games out..and is not like i gonna buy each and every 1... I personally am very happy with the 3 games I own (I ain't even play them out yet).. + I rel excited bout the new games coming + Home

What bout the big rush for 360 @ the start which didn't have a big slew of games as it has now???

Well sorry to burst your bubble..but I'm not a sensible gamer

and I never started comparing to the 360 :|
