Unreal Engine runs into troubleLawsuits, delaysBy Wily Ferret: Tuesday 24 July 2007, 09:29EPIC HAS ALREADY had one out-of-the-park hit on its latest Unreal engine with Xbox shooter Gears of War. Despite that title's popularity, however, there are plenty of questions being asked about the engine's capabilities, build status, and Epic's ability to deliver anything else. These questions are being asked not least by Silicon Knights, top-flight developer of upcoming console title Too Human. The firm is suing Epic for failing to deliver key features and documentation on the engine in time for Too Human to keep up with development schedule - resulting in a sloppy showing at E3 last year and no release date yet in sight. Key features of the game engine - including those present in Gears of War but not in developer builds - were delivered super-late, maliciously, the firm says.Silicon Knights alleges that the witholding of data was deliberate, but other licensees of the Unreal technology have spoken up in a somewhat spotty defence. Talking over at Shacknews, developers working on UE3 games suggest that Epic was just incompetent, not malicious. What remains clear is that Epic is yet to deliver Unreal Tournament 3, its second in-house game based on the engine, and is still refusing to set a firm date for its release - perhaps suggesting that despite the appearance of Gears on the 360, Epic is having as much trouble with its own dev cycle as other licensees are.Meanwhile, Sony is admitting to not helping out Epic as much as it could have done with the PS3, and is now standing up and saying that UE3 on PS3 is going to get a whole lot more effective from hereon out.Speaking to Game Informer, Sony's Phil Harrison said that "If we’re honest, we didn’t do enough of a good job supporting them and getting them the tools and technology early enoug... Also, Epic isn’t a huge company. They don’t have unlimited resource. We have parachuted in some of our SWAT team of super engineers to help them. Specifically, to optimize for SPUs (synergistic processing units) which are the point of difference that the Cell processor has."Harrison seems to be hoping that this will put some energy behind UE3 development and will help out those looking to release cross-platform franchises based on the new engine.
Folks, I checked with Steve Polge and he said that YES we are supporting keyboard and mouse in Unreal Tournament 3 on PS3. He is confident we are doing it in a way that will be balanced without feeling "gimped" for either side. We'll also allow people to choose whether or not they want to allow mixed controller vs. keyboard/mouse games or not.I think you guys are going to love UT3!More details to come later.

UT3 is en route with DX10 ahoyGood news for GPU fansBy Wily Ferret: Thursday, 04 October 2007, 1:51 PM GOOD NEWS for hardware geeks and gamers today as the latest raft of Unreal Tournament news comes out of Epic's development facility in the US of A.The good news for gamers: the minimum specs aren't too bad, with a Radeon 9600 card and 512MB of system RAM as a minimum. The bad news: expect the game to run like treacle at 800x600 without something closer to the recommended spec, which lists a 2.4GHz dual core processor and GeForce 7800 GTX card as A Good Idea.Of course, hardware enthusiasts have been crying out for a game that will utilise the power of the expensive cards they've bought, so the big spec list is a good thing. They will be happy to know, then, that despite the fact the PS3 version has been delayed until 2008, the PC version is still on track to ship in November. Still no word on exactly what kind of PhysX integration is going to be included, but we will perhaps find out for ourselves come the twilight of the year. Finally, Epic has confirmed that, unlike Crysis, DX9 and DX10 gamers will be able to play together. This has delighted those in the have-not category of PC enthusiasts, who may have felt a little segregated after the recent news that DX10 gamers will get their own 'special' Crysis servers. Since UT3 uses DX10 more for aesthetic than functional purposes, gamers win out this time around. µ
geed. UT on PS3 goin an be ass Not because of the game....but UT is wayyyyyyyyyyyy too fast paced for a controler. Same as Unreal Championship for the XBOX. It looked fine and played the same but a controler is just too slow. The proof was in Unreal Champ 2, Lilandri Conflict for the XBOX....a VERY bess game mind you. Where you can pull out to 3rd person and go mele and guns. IMO it was one of the BEST UT games ive played.Anyway, PS3 owners dont have a huge amount of FPS games out, so it could very well be a good crowdpleaser.
