Well I got started pretty recently, early 2000

800Mhz Thuderbird processor
128mb Sdr
30 gb maxtor hdd (which still works btw)
dvd rom (eventually bought a cd burner which cost about $1,200 at the time.
Voodoo 3 3500 video card
Some cheap pc-chips motherboard (that wasthe first thing to go)
17" Viewsonic (which still works but shows yellow sometimes)

it had modem, sound etc etc, really an excellent PC in its time. Whole setup cost around 18 grand with Windows 98SE original oem disc.

My first PC was built in about mid-2001:

Duron 700MHz
PC Chips M810, fully integrated (oh, how many of these boards were sold like hot bread!! and then went stale so quickly!)
128MB SDRAM
Seagate 20GB HDD (cost $1050 at the time; a 40GB was $1400)
CD-Burner (cost $750 at the time)
AOC 17" monitor (cost $1300 at the time; went awry after just 9 months - Christmas Time - while playing a just-acquired Worms World Party HARD CORE...we talking 15 hours a day online gaming on dial up!!)


hard drive lasted 3 years, fried CPU by trying to over clock to 933Mhz, board frig up after a BIOS upgrade, sprang de CD-Burner for small$$.... sigh

But it worked and worked well....

i remember ATI had a card called a rage and i managed to get a ATI rage 128 fury (i had the agp version cause agp did now now come out or sum and it was all the rage [get it ] and man it was nice, i think one of the first games i ran was sc), wasn't sure how though, ran until late 2002 when i built my next system
i had another ati card before the top one but it was crappy
a cdrom

I think this a little inaccurate as my first computer was an APPLE which until recently was not reffered to as a PC, in fact that was an INSULT to apples once upon a time... my my how times have changed... either way the very first computer I ever had was an APPLE IIe.... but as far as PCs go, the very first PC I PERSONALLY owned was a Micron Client Pro

When I saw that I told mehself I eh touching a PC till it hit 500... so said, so done.

1st Personal Computer was a Commodore 64 (1984).
1st IBM Compatible was a Spirit 286 (1987 or 88).

Although I did work with 8088 and 8086 PC's, though I never owned one.  MSDOS, IBMDOS, PCDOS or NDOS were the most common choices of OS for IBM compatible PC's in those days, but not the only choices!

First thing I had to do was buy a brand new boxed copy of MS-DOS 6.22. I installed it and was in business. Then, of course I had to get the new Windows 3.11. Unfortunately, that required more RAM than I had - 4 MB. So, I took it into a shop to add more RAM (my PC skills were not up to par yet). The guy said that I had to replace the 2 MB that we had with two new 2 MB SIMM's. It only cost a couple hundred US. Then, Windows 3.11 could be installed. The thing could use a mouse with that new Windows so I got a serial mouse. Then, it would help if I had sound so I bought a Sound Blaster 16 card and installed it myself. A modem was next in line so I got one of those new 28.8 modems. That was a pain in the @$$ to install with those COM ports and IRQ settings. I still don't remember how I got that $hit to work. Now that I had all this new stuff installed, I had to have something nice to play with on my PC. Of course, I went and bought the After Dark screen saver. Can you say flying toasters?
