Because life is boring...
Ok seriously...
No wait... thats true...
life is boring, tiresome, painful and short... thus playing video games you get to be a couch potato, follow some colourful no tail characted and go through and even shorter lifespan.

Ok ok now seriously... they are fun because they appeal to the little kids in us that likes colours and moving objects... it must be a pre/natal thing :p

In video games you can do thing that you would other wise never dream of doing.

For eg. try smashing everything in your mothers house and see what happens ^_^

Video Games relieve my stress.
Also it gives me a chance to kill 'virtual people'
have intercourse with 'virtual women'
drive 'virtual cars'
and in games like Pokemon...own 'virtual pets'

cause quite frankly...these days.....I don't give a 'virtual f***'

Nuff said -_-

They allow us to lose ourselves in another reality, that is somehow just more fun to be in sometimes than real life.
Just ask those WoW and Everquest players.

I mean, how ELSE can I kill Akrid scum.

Video games are fun because they appeal to our deepest desires. What we do in games we cannot do in real life but we would if we could. The world of games is the one place where everybody can truely be themselves, even if you are a crazy serial killer or an over sealous control freak, without being looked down at. We tend to think that games allow us to be someone else but the truth is that society, with all it's rules and regulations, actually forces us to be just like everyone else. Games let us escape these confines and be our inner selves.

Scary thought there AIDS... I think there is 1 particular thing you should mention, that being that it is not necessarily that you are allowed to be your inner self, but rather allowed to see what it would be like in a different role. Cause let's face it, to admit to wanting to be a gun toting, foul mouth ganster who runs around killing ppl and jacking cars would give legitimate reason to stop violent games from being sold period. I am not saying there aren't such sick ppl out there, but with the negative view video games are getting and being made scape goats to acts of atrocity, its risky to suggest that it's ur inner self showing through. On the other hand, perhaps video games could be used as a tool to determine if kids/people have violent tendencies or worse... that way you'd use what some ppl are lobbying as a terrorist training tool as a society analysing tool.

Well the thing about it is that we all wish we could kill somebody at least once in our lives but that wouldn't make you go out and buy a gun and actually do it. If you have high enough moral standing and the basic knowledge of right and wrong you will not commit random acts of violence. That doesn't mean that you don't want to just that you won't do it 'cause you know it's wrong. In that case, violent video games are just the thing to help us deal with these primal urges by living them out in a world of fantasy that doesn't conform to the rules of standard society. Taking a virtual life doesn't make you more likely to take a real one. You only feel comfortable doing it because at the end of the day nobody is hurt. The US government knows this and that is why they made Americas Army. What better way to see who is a born soldier than by letting them virtualy go through boot camp and serve in the army.

Games let us take out all our anger on poor defenseless crates and barrels. I mean, seriously, how many crates and barrels do you guys think have been destroyed by gamers worldwide? The numbers would be astronomical.

I agree and disagree with this. Yes its a tool, but its not necessarily an indication of a born soldier. But I suppose in the least one will have an inkling into what field in the military might be suitable to ppl. Cause let's face it some ppl may be good tactians but LOUSY aim with a REAL gun. As for crates and barrels... i'd estimate... forget that...
