PWNED: http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=2215 rejoice those with dreams of owning your own... as to who can actually do this locally... thats anyone's guess...
I have an at&t activated iphone which I would like to use here in Trinidad with a local sim.
I have ssh insalled and everything working.  I have some questions which I hope someone can answer:

Does anyone know where I can purchase an infinity usb unlimited sim programmer here in Trinidad ?
Is a two year or three year old bmobile prepaid sim card COMP128V1 (I believe the difference between a v1, v2, v3 is that the v1 is a 5v and the v2 and v3 is 3 volt ????)
If not, can I get a bmobile or digicel COMP128v1 card somewhere ?

I did go to one of the cell companies in port of spain that unlock phones but they did not appear to understand what I was asking (probably me).

US teen trades hacked iPhone for Nissan 350Z

New wheels 'a great end to a great summer'

By Lester Haines
Published Wednesday 29th August 2007 12:10 GMT

A New Jersey teenager has cut a deal to trade a hacked iPhone for a new set of wheels and three further iPhones, Yahoo! reports.

Seventeen-year-old George Hotz, of Glen Rock, made the announcement on his blog, having successfully unlocked the Jesus phone. Duly released from the shackles of AT&T, the device was then swiftly offered for sale.

Hotz said: "Terry Daidone, the founder of Certicell contacted me this morning, and offered to make a trade for the iPhone. I traded it for a sweet Nissan 350Z and 3 8GB iPhones." He described the trade as "a great end to a great summer", and he can only hope AT&T's attack lawyers don't provoke a sudden autumn chill.

Daidone, who's the co-founder of Louisville, Kentucky-based CertiCell, has apparently also offered the young man a paid consulting job, but stresses the company doesn't have "any plans on the table right now to commercialize Mr. Hotz' discovery".

Nicely done.

Jobs addresses Iphone masses

Here's a hundred bucks, now shut up and leave me alone

By INQUIRER newsdesk: Friday 07 September 2007, 13:26
MERE MORTAL Steve Jobs has been moved to address Iphone buyers personally.

Poor Steve says he "received hundreds of emails from Iphone customers who are upset about Apple dropping the price of the gadget by $200, two months after it went on sale."

Many, we imagine, wanted to pay more. But some feel shafted.

It's tough in the fast lane, Steve suggested. "If you always wait for the next price cut or to buy the new improved model, you'll never buy any technology product because there is always something better and less expensive on the horizon," he chiseled. "This is life in the technology lane."

"Being in technology for 30+ years I can attest to the fact that the technology road is bumpy," opined St Steve sagely.

Still, having said all that, Jobbo said Apple had decided to bung everyone who bought an Iphone from either Apple or AT&T, $100 to spend on more Apple plastic.

His Appleness apologised to his miffed minions, and promised to try harder from now on. µ

Now the actual letter:
Quote
To all iPhone customers:

I have received hundreds of emails from iPhone customers who are upset about Apple dropping the price of iPhone by $200 two months after it went on sale. After reading every one of these emails, I have some observations and conclusions.

First, I am sure that we are making the correct decision to lower the price of the 8GB iPhone from $599 to $399, and that now is the right time to do it. iPhone is a breakthrough product, and we have the chance to 'go for it' this holiday season. iPhone is so far ahead of the competition, and now it will be affordable by even more customers. It benefits both Apple and every iPhone user to get as many new customers as possible in the iPhone 'tent'. We strongly believe the $399 price will help us do just that this holiday season.

Second, being in technology for 30+ years I can attest to the fact that the technology road is bumpy. There is always change and improvement, and there is always someone who bought a product before a particular cutoff date and misses the new price or the new operating system or the new whatever. This is life in the technology lane. If you always wait for the next price cut or to buy the new improved model, you'll never buy any technology product because there is always something better and less expensive on the horizon. The good news is that if you buy products from companies that support them well, like Apple tries to do, you will receive years of useful and satisfying service from them even as newer models are introduced.

Third, even though we are making the right decision to lower the price of iPhone, and even though the technology road is bumpy, we need to do a better job taking care of our early iPhone customers as we aggressively go after new ones with a lower price. Our early customers trusted us, and we must live up to that trust with our actions in moments like these.

Therefore, we have decided to offer every iPhone customer who purchased an iPhone from either Apple or AT&T, and who is not receiving a rebate or any other consideration, a $100 store credit towards the purchase of any product at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store. Details are still being worked out and will be posted on Apple's website next week. Stay tuned.

We want to do the right thing for our valued iPhone customers. We apologize for disappointing some of you, and we are doing our best to live up to your high expectations of Apple.

Steve Jobs
Apple CEO

Posted on Apple's website HERE and just to make sure its available for some time to come here's a screenshot of it:

OK, I have my iPhone unlocked with the free software unlock.

The iPhone works now on both the Digicel and bMobile Networks.  Edge even works on Digicel prepaid.

I'm trying to get bMobile to work on a prepaid SIM card.  Anyone on this board by any chance know the EDGE settings for bMobile ?

Apple disapproves of Iphone voice app

No endorsement for speech recognition

By Tony Dennis: Wednesday, 03 October 2007, 10:50 AM

EVEN THOUGH its Iphone customers might be interested in installing a speech recognition system developed by VST (Voice Signal Technology), Apple won't endorse it, the INQ has learnt.

Back in August, Voice Signal announced that its engineers have ported several of its existing applications onto the Apple Iphone as a proof of concept.

The initial apps include Vsearch a local search facility driven by speech recognition and Vtunes – a voice enabled music player.

Voice Signal has placed demos of both apps on Youtube as well as on its own web site.

Despite the fact that both videos have drawn respectable viewing Youtube figures, the INQ was told that Apple has been less than keen about co-operating with the software company.

This has a distinct whiff of that old American disease – the 'not-invented-here' syndrome.

VST is now part of Nuance Communications which claims to be the fastest growing software company with revenues going from $388 million to an estimated $600 million in a year.

The company's new general manager, Steve Miller revealed that the company expects the mobile sector to show the biggest level of growth – around 40 per cent.

Apple's ban on third-party apps questioned

Protection not required

By Nick Farrell: Wednesday, 03 October 2007, 10:00 AM

Falk AdSolution

MAKER of expensive entertainment gear, Apple's statement that that it is protecting carriers by forbidding third partly applications its turning out to be hot air.

Apple Messiah Steve Jobs told Newsweek in January that the reason he was forbidding third party applications on the iPhone was to protect AT&T because it would stuff up their network.

Jobs claimed that AT&T doesn’t want to see their West Coast network go down because some application messed up.

However the statement flies in the face of what AT&T is doing. It is advertising for third party applications for all its mobile phones except the Iphone.

Mark Bercow, the senior vice president of business development at Palm told the New York Times that it spent a lot of time with AT&T to encourage developers to create applications for its phones.

AT&T even has a website to encourage developers to write programs for its phones on half a dozen platforms.

The same site blames Apple for only allowing limited applications that work through the Safari browser.

If Jobs is not protecting AT&T by forbidding third party applications on the iPhone, who or what is he protecting?

AT&T promises not to terminate moaners

Even if it is in the contract

By Nick Farrell: Wednesday, 03 October 2007, 9:49 AM

Falk AdSolution

APPLE's chum, AT&T denied it was the Burmese government of the phone industry after small print in its contract was found to allow the outfit to pull the plug on users who did not toe the company line.

Section 5.1 of the terms of service contract says that AT&T can pull the plug on anyone or anything that "tends to damage the name or reputation of AT &T, or its parents, affiliates and subsidiaries."

However AT&T spinners have been working overtime to say that this phrase was only there for the lawyers and didn't mean what it sounds.

An official quote to Consumer Affairs, AT&T said it respects its subscribers' rights to voice their opinions and concerns over any matter they wish.

But it does want the power to disassociate itself from websites and messages explicitly advocating violence, or any message that poses a threat to children. AT&T does not terminate customer service solely because a customer speaks negatively about the company, the spokesman said.

So, this phrase is basically a get out clause so AT&T can shut down a user for doing all sorts of nasty stuff.

While this all sounds fair enough, the clause does not actually say it. While it is true a paedophile ring running on an network does damage the "name and reputation" of AT&T, the clause would be better say "we reserve the right to shut down illegal sites and those advocating violence". This clause does allow AT&T to shut you down if you are going for the company online.

Hackers roll back iPhone firmware

Calls still a no-go

By INQUIRER staff: Tuesday, 02 October 2007, 12:43 PM

Falk AdSolution

WORRIED Iphoners who have used hacks were left in the deep end when Apple sent out a firmware upgrade which turned their phones into shiny, pretty bricks. However, hackers have figured out how to roll back the upgrade, reports Macworld.

Instructions, available here on an iPhone development wiki, have been tested by the folk at Macworld and it turns out they're in working order - a previously broken iPhone was reverted to a usable state although it had no access to the phone itself or data network.

This means that while the phone isn't working as yet, owners of the hyped kit can still use some functions like the Ipod and Wi-Fi features. However, hackers are working on unlocking the iPhone's baseband chip, which should allow for calls after sufficient tinkering.

A baseband hack may not be around for a while though, reckons security researcher Tom Ferris, who says that Apple has done a good job with the encryption on the latest firmware. Keep your i's peeled. µ

Iphone runs into trouble in France
Jobs' Mob's miscalculation
By Nick Farrell: Monday, 08 October 2007, 8:42 AM

APPLE has made a bit of an error when the trying to flog its Iphone in France.
According to French newspapers, Jobs' Mob forgot that it is harder to screw over consumers in the EU in the same way it can in the United States.
Although Apple says it has a deal with Orange, negotiations with the French telco are running aground because they do not want the same bizarre lock-ins which have been seen over the pond.
French consumer laws specifically prohibit the dependent sale of a product and a service which means that Orange will have to sell the Iphone with and without subscription. Apple is not happy with that and, since it has refused to let Orange flog a subsidised Iphone as part of a package, there is little reason for anyone to sign up for an Orange deal.
Orange insists that it has got a contract signed and there is a chance that it will be able to flog the Iphone before Christmas. However Apple is not happy about the way that things are going.
France could be the only place in the world where the Iphone has to be sold unlocked and some Apple executives think this is a bad idea.

This is an instance where I would say "FCUK you appel, i'll eat a sandwich"

and the person who is using says it works quite fine, though he had to do a few mods to it.

Greenpeace says Iphone stinks

Hazardous contents

By Paul Hales: Tuesday, 16 October 2007, 9:58 AM

ENVIONMENTALISTS at Greenpeace say they tested Apple's Iphone and found it contains hazardous chemicals.

The outfit said it wondered if Apple chief Steve Jobs, would keep his promise to green Apple. After the activists criticised Apple previously, Jobs said: " Apple is ahead of, or will soon be ahead of, most of its competitors" on environmental issues.

Greenpeace says it was therefore a bit miffed when then Apple phone launched with no mention of any green features.

iStink

"So we bought a new Iphone in June and sent it our Research Laboratories in the UK" write the activists here.

The tests uncovered two types of hazardous substances in the device, there are: toxic brominated compounds (indicating the prescence of brominated flame retardants, and hazardous PVC.

Dr. David Santillo, Senior Scientist at the Greenpeace Research Laboratories, said, "Two of the phthalate plasticisers found at high levels in the headphone cable are classified in Europe as 'toxic to reproduction, category 2' because of their long-recognised ability to interfere with sexual development in mammals.

"While they are not prohibited in mobile phones, these phthalates are banned from use in all toys or childcare articles sold in Europe. Apple should eliminate the use of these chemicals from its products range."

Greenpeace International toxics campaigner. Zeina Alhajj, said
Steve Jobs had "missed the call" on making the Iphone his first step towards greening Apple's products. "It seems that Apple is far from leading the way for a green electronics industry as competitors, like Nokia, already sell mobile phones free of PVC".

Greenpeace also criticised Apple for not having a global free take-back policy making it more likely that millions of the noxious phones will end up in landfill.

It says the phone will have to be more environmentally friendly for its upcoming European launch.

However, according to reports, Greenpeace's revelations could yet see Apple sued by green agencies such as the Center for Environmental Health in California.

Greenpeace's findings are detailed in this report: "Missed call: the iPhone's hazardous chemicals". µ

Is Apple Spying On iPhone Users?

Posted by Stephen Wellman, Nov 19, 2007 09:55 AM

Just when you thought the security risks of the iPhone couldn't get any worse, we discover this. According to one member of the Hackint0sh forum, Apple is using the iPhone to spy on its users.

Here is a look at the unconfirmed claim from Gizmodo:

The evidence in the code shows that the Stocks and Weather applications send your IMEI number—the unique number which identifies your iPhone and is tied to your personal information—to Apple, along with the nature of the information you are looking at.

While there's no evidence that Apple actually uses this information for any purpose, good or evil, the code shows that every time you try to access a detailed information on whatever stock, your IMEI will be sent embedded in the URL. This could be cross-referenced with IP location and the information in Apple or its partner's databases to gather extremely valuable data for marketing purposes.

Is this something we should we concerned about? No doubt the privacy advocates will be up in arms. But for those of us who've been online for over 14 years, the notion of online "privacy" is tenuous at best. Web portals like Yahoo have been tracking users with cookies since the late 1990s. Everyone knows that Google tracks its users through search and its hosted applications, like Gmail, and uses this data to serve contextual ads (as well as a way to track its applications and improve them). Not that many users seem to care.

Mobile, however, may be different. People place far more personal attachment to their mobile phones than they do to their PCs or laptops. Now that more people are using devices like the iPhone to surf the Web and run Web apps, will they feel violated once they know their mobile online information is as transparent as their online behavior on the desktop?

Also, the technique that Apple is using here, connecting IMEI and browsing information, is a little different than the techniques described above:

Tying IMEI and browsing information is also different to cookies: when you access a web site anonymously and they store a cookie in your browser, this is not tied to any personal information. Moreover, you can delete the cookie in your computer or avoid them using your browser privacy options. The IMEI, however, is a solid unique personal identifier, which makes the whole thing a little bit disturbing. More importantly, there's no op-out and Apple covers its back with the iPhone's license, as readers have pointed already in the comments.

What do you think? Is Apple's tracking mechanism here over the line? Does this go too far? Or is this no different than other online behavioral targeting system?

Iphone G3 confirmed at Apple WWDC

Updated continuously start queuing July 11th

By Stewart Meagher: Monday, 09 June 2008, 7:49 PM

STEVE JOBS HAS JUST confirmed at the Worldwide Developer Conference in San Fransisco what everyone in the world, and his wife, thought they knew. There will be a new Iphone in 70 countries starting from July 11th.

The Iphone 3G, starting at $199 for 8GB and going up to $299 for the 16GB version, will be even thinner, with a black plastic back, solid metal buttons, the same gorgeous display, camera, flush headphone jack, and dramatically improved audio.

The 16GB version will also be available in white.

Download speeds are much improved with a file which took 18 seconds to download on EDGE taking just five seconds on 3G.

Battery life will be 300 hours standby with five hours of 3G talk time, seven hours of video or 24 hours of audio.

GPS will also be built into the handset out of the box using Google maps for tracking.

Iphone 2.0 software will have three main thrusts: Enterprise, third party software development and new end-user features.

The phone will have Exchange support out of the box as well as push email.

Apple staff then gave a demo of Interface Builder, part of the Iphone SDK which allows application front ends to be built with a drag and drop interface.

Sega showed a demo of Super Monkey Ball for the Iphone, with 100 levels, which will be available at the launch of the App Store at $9.99. So that'll be about forty quid in England then. Pangea Software have also ported two existing games, Enigmo, a physics-based game and Cro-Mag Ralley, the ancient Mario Kart alike which has shipped with Apple kit since about 1943. Both will be $9.99.

The App Store, which goes live in 62 countries in July will allow developers to release software to every Iphone user and keep 70 per cent of the revenue.

Band, written by an independent UK developer, looks a bit like a chopped down version of Gargeband and allows you to play and record "impressive sounding" instruments including piano, guitar, bass and drums.

Ebay showed auction functionality which operates in the same way as the no rmal Ebay website.

Next up was Loopt which is a location-aware social notworking application which not only tells you what your friends are doing, but where they are on a GPS style map.

Associated press have announced a free news gathering application which will allow users to read localised news using the GPS functionality. You can even upload your own news stories including pics.

Jobs also confirmed that there will be a new OSX version, called Snow Leopard, but it will be at least another two hours before we have more news of that.

cool now it makes sense to buy it as a gift. Not really into phones myself. I wonder if I should wait for a new Ipod touch to come out.

An opinion should be the result of thought, not a substitute for it.
